[EDIT]
Redid the shading where the neck meets the hair.. I think it looks better now. Added reference pic.
[/EDIT]
I did this last night with the intention of using it as part of an interesting image, but when I saw it today I decided it wouldn't work for what I had planned. So it's just another boring practice pic Any Crits/comments/hints at what I'm doing wrong are appreciated.
If anyone wants, I can scan the reference and post it.
Thanks -JK
and the steps
1. I've blocked in the basic form in a midtone, and added a couple large areas different shades. I carefully try to capture the general form only, everything else is really rough.
2. Here I lay down a basic shading pattern and colors. It's still rough, no zooming yet, and all the colors so far have been specifically chosen by hand.
3. Now I zoom into 200%, use the paintbrush at opacities 30 and 50 to blend the areas together and make any small fixes. I'm constantly alt-clicking to use to pick a new shade when I smooth an edge.
4. Mostly zoomed in to 300%, I use a little smudging along the in the hair, then add some paintbrushing strokes on top. On the face I use the airbrush to lessen any edges. I add some details with the paintbrush size 1, and do a few form fixes too. I should have chosen a background color earlier.

Mantis: Maybe you're reading the picture wrong (something with the hair), or something's a little wrong in the shape or shading, but the neck looks normal width to me. (in a near straight on view the neck appears slightly thinner than the head.)
Resistanz: Thanks going to get it and scan it.

very nice and thanks for posting the steps (I should probably give more of a try at blocking-in and work like that myself, just a little counter intuitive at first though) |

nicely rendered
some crit points if you don't mind:
check her left cheek, her neck and the shape of her jaw- they look a bit odd to me.

I tried to define the line between the hair and the neck better, since they were similar colors, moved the hair in very slightly in places. (may have to hit reload, look at step 4 for neck before changes.) Anyway, I that's all I'll do now, the neck doesn't bother me more than all the little other things wrong now that I suddenly see
Thanks for the comments mantis, Resistanz, travis, Nex, Bilbo.

Her left eye is also a little bit high.
Have you tried flipping the picture horizontally? That really helps when picking out all the little errors in proportion. |

guys remember NO ONE is propotianate perfectly, look at your face in the mirror closely and you will see your face is not perfectly symmetrical or proportianate |

No one said that everyone is proportionate -- but the portrait's proportions are not the reference model's.
Oh, and, who was that Canadian complaining about Americans with bad spelling? Check out the post above. |

Looks really good. I like the skin and the eyes.
Though I would say that the hair at the bottom looks too much like straw. If it is a seperate layer, use the smudge tool (In photoshop if that's what you used) at the ends of the hair to blend it out more. I also think that the shading around the mouth line looks wierd, as if she is partially opening her mouth (too shadowy in the middle)Her mouth line is more tight in the picture.
