Iv been here since 1999 and it seems that now everyone with 3+ star rateing has calimed ownership of this board and dominion over anyone that does not match their talant.
If anyone tries to come here that "The Elite" see as unskilled wannabe artists. Then that person will be insulted and told that they are not welcome here.

All "The Elite" want is for eveyone to feed their ego by praising their artwork.

Ill tell you one thing. If there where only 2 sections on this board. One for "The Elite". and one for the "unskilled wannabe artists". I would spend all of my time with the "unskilled wannabe artists".

There there chuck. It's not so bad. It's true the place seems to have deverloped this idea that faultlessly reserved politeness is the only way to go. There was always a touch of elitism and snobbery going around. The only time it wasn't in evidence was when there were truly great and shining artists hanging around providing guidance in their spare time (people who say we need a God to all be equals might be on to something).
Currently everyone's trying oh so hard to not feed the mythical Bad Feeling Monster. In fact discussing the Bad Feeling Monster itself counts as feeding the Bad Feeling Monster. Sooner or later the fact that politeness and bad art are different things will sink in and the fit will hit the shan all over again. Then I get to flex my world weary "seen it all before" smarmy git persona some more.

I don't feel that way....i'm just another face in the crowd.....

Lets not start another arguement about "The Elite"
and "The Wannabes"....

In my eyes NO artist is better than the other....
ART is ART......it all comes from the same place....inside...

Art isn't competition, it's a part of you....

I agree, art is just another extension of one's self.
Who's to say one person is better than another simply on the basis of a single image?

LeChuck, I think you're mistaken. I've got more than three stars and I'm not lording them over anyone. In fact, I'm thinking of turning them off because people are misusing and misconstruing their import. Since the forum has reopened I've spent all my time commenting, critiquing and even contributing several overpaints when I thought I had something constructive to add. I'm not looking for praise or seeking to insult anyone. I simply enjoy the process and the company. It's nice to find people I can talk to about "alpha masks" and not have them think I'm refering to a type of halloween costume.

What brings this on? Did I miss a scathing post or something? I'm not seeing it.

-Pat

hmmm well i can see what you mean chuck...but there are some ppl who have egos and some that dont. i think most artists are pretty open about it and dont flaunt their talent. No matter how good you are there is always someone better... so i just use that to further my talent. i strive to be the best i can be...

PLEASE READ THIS

all you're doing lechuck is insulting people. I'm one of the more vocal assholes (I do admit to being quite harsh and critical, not to mention at times insulting, but I don't try to be unfair or hypocritical) and I'm not elite in skill, and a lot of the talented people are quite friendly to newbies, however the issue which gets on the nerves of those who take their art seriously is when newbies either come in here with an attitude like " do this now! it'll be so cool and if you don't do it you suck you loser!" or if they come in and show either no humility regarding their work and skill or no discretion in terms of what they post or what belongs where. A lot of the more skilled artists on this board create probably minimally 5 - 10 times what they post on the board, but they realize the difference between what is done for personal growth and what they and others can actually learn from or enjoy. A lot of the newer members who receive criticism for their behavior don't bother to lurk and learn from other posts or sources, and don't bother to self criticize, and instead post things which are blatantly at best sketchy and derivative in the place where the talented or respectful post things that they have spent up to months on. it's just plain disrespectful not to mention uninteresting to the vast majority.

Errr. I don't even know what the damn stars mean. I thought they meant how much people liked/hated your guts? Am I mistaken?

You can turn the stars off in your preferences. I think they're silly, personally, and disabled mine as soon as that feature was added to the board.

Lechuck, I want to hear your response to what I said, my justification. I'd be interested if you can change my mind as to my attitude, and I'd be appreciative if you saw something legitimate in what I said, but even if you say something else completely I'd at least like recognition that you read my point of view.

yeah stars are wack. i got another 0 the other day, and all i could think was that someone didnt like something i said and instead of telling me they rated me poorly, which is really gay. oh and inefective. but im keeping them, theyre cute.
and LeChuck, youre WAY off! from my own observations, everyones been really polite as of late ESPECIALLY the so called elite. are we reading the same board? and versuvius, as usual, speaks the truth.

I think it is much easier and somewhat safer to give praise. It's easy to say:

"Wow, that is the coolest thing I've seen in the last 100 years, you are a true god"

Than it is to look at a post, see something wrong, see how it could be better, and the hard part, try to tell the person that in a 'nice' way. I've looked at threads that will have 20 replies and everyone is saying that it's cool etc. There won't be a single critism or negative comment about it even though the hand is 4 times as big as the supporting forearm.

I guess part of it is that it feels weird to critism someone who is so much better than you. I always try to look for at least one area that an image could be 'tweaked' a bit - maybe that is like saying the glass is always half empty too, and comes across that you are a negatively minded person.

I guess I try to convince myself that even a god appreciates someone being able to show them insight into how their image could be improved - otherwise it must purely be an ego thing. Here I've posted this image here, I'm a god, there is nothing wrong with it, lavish me with praise.

BTW Poprocksz "Art isn't competition, it's a part of you...." is probably one of the most insightful things I've heard in quite some time ---- it's cool!
