i need help in getting the correct perspective for the background, its a big cylindrical chamber and as you can tell from the figures im trying to get an upward angle so that the viewer can see all the way up to the open hole at the top.

ive got a rough outline but it doesnt feel right. i would appreciate it if someone could to an overdraw to show me how i could achieve the effect.

perspective is one of my weakest areas

weeoo---this is my first reply in quite some time...well i love the perspective you are trying to achieve...i always wanted to do that perspective but have always been too scared to try...
ne way i think the chamber is ok for the perspective ...
as for the main figure..the bottom half of his body is out of perspective..i think you tried to fit a lot of the figure in the picture and in doing so, you made it seem too crowded and fat looking...maybe make the chamber taller so that you can move the figure up and fit everything in...this will help will the perspective of the figure i think...good job on the lighting so far

I'm not confident enough to actually help you, but i can offer a workaround- try recreating a simple scene in a 3d application- just a tube for the background and boxes to represent the people , and position the camera..this should give you a simple yet useful guide to base your painting on.

Hmm..i wasnt to happy with the way the legs of the chief turned out, hes walking forward right towards the fictional camera and so that leg sort of widens all the way.

i wish i could use a 3D application but i havent got a clue about them

if there happens to be anyone out there that does, would you be able to render a quick mock-up using a hollow cylinder for the chamber and some solid cylinders for the figures??????

well thats my cry for help done!

Hi,

Well, overall your perspective looks solid to me. You may want to consider just switching out the Chief's stride (right leg back, left leg forward) and see if that helps the whole set up...it might just be a little easier to pull off...then again, maybe not. Hhmmm, I guess I could dustoff my little Nendo freeware app and see what I could pull out my you know what...let me see

You working with a very pushed perspective... I'd suggest you push it even more... like so:

Arc][Pello, you dont have a real problem, I believe.
Your perspective is correct AFAIK.
The problem you are experiencing is due to the position of your "camera".
you are too close to your characters, in a counterplungeing position.
The "distortion" effect you observe is in fact normal.
If you want to avoid it, you need to position your camera further from the characters, or use a different Field Of View (which would create other problems of distortion...)

I'll try to give it a try as soon as I have five minutes.
But like I said, this is normal.
All you need to decide is whether you want a really strong angle, which give a lot of intensity to the picture, or a more flat one, which would get rid of the "distortion", but also of the strength of the angle of view.
It's all up to you, really

right heres an update version im much more happy with the layout now.
background is a going to be an elaborate set of corridoor lights, ive lowerd all the characters to chop off that section of leg that was bothering me, its now just a matter of time and effort till its finished.

Thanx everyone

Well, I think you'll have to modify the guys again, as they are *tilting* sideways.
This is a different perspective from the one you had originally: here it's a 1 vanishing point one. I think.
So the guys should be on a plane, not on a curve like in the first version.
Then again, nothing prevents you from having the whole picture tilt to give a nice effect, but that's another story.
