hi again!
Gosh, I'm really getting into this

I dunno how I got this far, this one is like most of my pictures: I start it and then it's going its own way! At first, I wanted to do a guy weight-lifting or something, but the only reference I had was this proportions sketch out of a book. Well, let's try that one first - stiff, so the guy must be on report Bald, orange cloths. Number's still missing, I gotta figure out the coloring first... I intended to do a white guy, but at first, the colors were too bright. When I was done with the head, shirt and arms, I noticed he turned black *g* THIS is what I mean by it's drawing itself.
...and that's my problem: I want it to look more er... realistic. This looks like a great comic to me right now, but I DON'T WANNA DO THAT So what can I do to replace those lines please?

Plus - what background would be good here... police officer walking around, shouting or just some jail yard-like stuff (anyone seen the music video "Awake" by Godsmack?) with a gate or fence?

Thanks!

If you want the painting to look more reallistic you are going to have to put the character in a more natural position. Look to magazines for that. Then you going to have to get the anatomy correct. The magazine will also kinda help you with that. When you are done the drawing stage. make that layer "layer 1", leave the background white and blank for now. On layer 2 block in the local colours(the colours you see and where you see them) OVER the line drawing so that you do not have any black lines. progress from there and we can do another crit at that stage.

whew, I thought nobody would care about this, thanks man!

I already did some improvements...

I actually removed the black lines (blended out that layer) and started sharpening the outer shape. Kinda tried some fabric-like look, but didn't reallytake anything for a reference. Still looks a bit flat, maybe I gotta put some destinct highlights on top of the folds.

So... whadya think?

Good one Flat.

He means (I think) that you should *never* let a drawing draw itself. You're the artist, you must stay in control. If you have an idea in your head of what you're going for, not only will your drawings come out better, but (I find) it allows you to know when the drawing is finished. Believe it or not, I sometimes find myself not knowing when to stop.

It sounded to me like you felt guilty about drawing a black person and were trying to justify it, as if it was some issue that needed to be justified. I'm not offended, but that might be what Flat was pointing out...

whoops...
I didn't mean to say that! All I wanted to point out was "I wanted to do this, but out came that!"

And maybe you are right when you say "stay in control", but I guess I'm not skilled enough yet *g*
