hi there
i think i need your help, guys
i've got a problem with painting confused shadows coming from the branches in the top of this picture:
unfortunately my first attempt looks more like a camouflage paint :-)
can anybody give me an instruction how to construct anything like that?
(ha! sorry for my bad english ;-)

I wouldn't be able to answer on the shadows, but one thing I did notice...
The head seems to kinda stick out. Maybe you should try and make the neck or something more clear, so you can see its attached to the body.
Otherwise I really like it, very Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'ish.
Oh and a techical thing, you prolly even know yourself, if a person should slash with the sword, it wouldn't be held like that. Her hand is holding the sword, so if swung, it would hit with the dull side of the blade, and not actually the shart edge. I dont know if that makes sense. Maybe its just cuz its only in the beginning, who knows, I dont. |

Greetings Catahoochee,
I'm no expert but maybe this little paint over will help you think of some ideas....
From your picture is looks like you have several light sources on the go. The way her face is shadowed it's looking like there is a light on the ground pointing up at her face.
I'm far from a good digital artist. I still have many years left to get it down myself, but my suggestion is to start off with one (main) dominate light source and the slowly add others if need be.
I painted the light coming from the Top left. I even added in the "dreaded" lens flare for effect, hehehe...
Maybe trying to put in your mind that your painting "light" not colors will help you out a little.
Maybe some of the "big wigs' on the Forum will step up and show how it's really supose to be done, hehe... Come guys I'm taking notes ;-)
Cheers,
- Shawn |

Moved the highlight in her hair a bit.
I think the leaf shadows will look more real if they merge with other shadows, and you might want to very the amount of light that gets through the leaves.
Just ideas... |

This may help - the addition of shadow makes the sphere on the right look more like it is a uniformly white object with shadow.
