hey all, as all your crits in the past have been so helpful I was wondering if I could get some fresh eyes on this while it is still in progress.
It seems that everytime I put my pencil on the page it just gets worse and worse, I have some ideas as to why I think it's not working but would like any feedback you can offer
thanks. |

dang man thats sweet!
love how you drew his polearm. i agree with the crits about his pec/shoulder though. im really enjoying the subtlety(sp?) of the shading on his right forearm to show the muscles.
one question though:
while im sketching my concept and work it to get the correct anatomy/proportions ect. i end up darkening my lines alot. i can never just get the whole idea out loosely like it seems you did with this pic. any comments on how that is achieved? perhaps i simply draw way too heavy but this is a thing that has been frustrating me a little.
EDIT: getting worse and worse? please.

ok thanks for the compliments but I think the anatomy is beyond repair in this one. I am in the process of redrawing though
as for the question about sketching, I usually do a few thumbnails in pen or hb pencil, then pick the one I like and scan/blow it up to the size I want and print. Then depending on the quality of the thumb, I either sketch it out again reasonably heavy and put in all the details etc, then trace it again very lightly (using a 4h) before I start to render. If the thumb is good I can sometimes go straight from the print to the light sketch.
But that's how I do it, doesn't neccissarily mean it's right |
