Hello,

I'm currently working on an illustration for a nightmare scene. I was going for a foggy, foreboding atmosphere with some really creepy trees. Trees are nightmarish things to me anyway. I'll eventually throw some color onto this, but it would be nice to have some feedback on it before I actually start painting it. Anything I should work on?

No, I really like this too, particularly how the two main stumps roll into each other. Very solid composition... I'm interested to see where this goes. Only thought: maybe the lizard things are unnecessary?

i like it but its seems like most artwork on these forums is either dark/dreary/depressing...i wonder if this genre of artwork is easier for people to imaginate

Really cool work, I agree with Kantide, some fog in the foreground weaving through the trees would look really good.

Hmmm... dttrip probably has a point on the dark & depressing angle, but I would guess that most people who contribute to this forum - and who want to go pro - are preparing themselves for a SF/fantasy market where this kind of thing is pretty much the de facto standard.

For those who are quite happy remaining as 'amateurs' (such a dumb term), their influences are the pros who are paid to do dark & depressing. It's a vicious circle.

For whatever reason, Sijun seems to be largely perceived as a SF/fantasy art forum. There are other forums which deal in more 'real world' stuff.

Thanks for commenting everyone. Here's a new version of it. This is closer to what I had in mind.

kantide - Thanks for pushing me to add more fog. I had originally intended to have a lot of fog in it. I think the results are better now that there is more fog.

specialbrew - I reconsidered the lizards at your suggestion. Yeah, I decided they weren't necessary. I always seem to have this urge to put an animal in everything I do. Perhaps I'll put some crows in it. Maybe off in the distance. Glad you like the composition. It took about ten sketches to come up with this one.

dttrip - specialbrew has already commented and I like what he said, but not all of my art is like this. I can draw pink bunnies and kitties when I want.

jasonN - Thanks. I think the fog makes it look better.

dkimblad - I know what you mean about color. I usually like my value studies more than I like my color studies, but color is a requirement for this assignment.

Hi Turokess. You have great atmosphere in this piece, I really like the spindly shapes that the tops of the trees make. One suggestion I would make is to drop the value scale down a couple of notches. I think that making the shadows darker would improve the overall brooding feeling as well as increasing the visual impact. For instance, the hollow where the two trunks intertwine would be much stronger if it were black instead of a medium gray.

On a side note: Sarasota� hmm, let me guess. Ringling student?

I graduated from the Illustration program at Ringling in aug, now on to find a job. (ugh, real life is such a pain)
