Heya,
I been lurking around these forums for a while now, and have been very impressed at the high grade of most of the work here, i dug out an old pic i drew a coupla years back, and am looking to try cg-ing it, i am pretty new to cg-ing over pencil work, and was wondering on suggestions on how i would go about it, for reference i am using Psp version 7.

Calm down buddy! You can't expect to get instant responses all the time!

The way to cg it depends on the final effect you are going for. If you want a cartoonish look to it you are going to want to maintain the heavy linework. If you want to make it somewhat realistic, you will have to blend the heavy lines into the color. I don't work in PSP7 (I use photoshop). In photoshop, the first thing I would do is create a new layer over your original. Create an "onionskin" by filling that new layer with a reduced opacity of white, so that you can see a faint appearance of your original drawing. Then create a new layer on top of that and trace the main lines of your illustration with a nice black line. Then create yet another layer above that, and set it to multiply (if that feature is available in PSP7). That allows you to lay down colors without obliterating your black line.

That should be enough to get you started.

I took the liberty of doing a quick colorization of your image. Hope you don't mind. This will illustrate the info I posted earlier. The right side was colorized with no alteration to the drawing. The left side was colorized and then blended using the smudge tool. Just a quickie do give you an idea. Good luck on your attempt

Woah, johnny, the speed at which you colorized that in was pretty impressive, well by my standards anyway.. but then again, i am working with only mouse at the moment until my Wacom arrives in the post (fingers crossed, any day now) but i see how you have demonstrated it and thanks, i can do all the things you mentioned earlier in psp so that helped out alot i have started on it, nothing to post yet, but i would like to post the stages in progress.

And here is a rough colour version of the mech based on Johnny's technique he recommended, and roughly the same colours for the time being.. but will change now i seem to have the hang of it, thanks johnny!

Ok here's the redone version, using just the smudge tool, i am about to start colouring it, i'd like your comment's, tips etc.
(damn it takes forever to do with just a friggin' mouse :P)
