hey guys. after looking at the impressive sculptures by JohnC, i decided to trow my own attempts at the medium of super sculpey on the old messege board. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO RIP IT APART. (the sculpture is modeled from my interpretation of Maj.Kusanagi from Ghost in The Shell by Masamune Shirow) It took a couple of hours to get to this stage (around 5) and is now in need of some serious crits!
thanks people...
-peace

Nice work! Sculpting is something I've never done(except in the computer). The thighs look incredibly skinny! Looks nice though, keep it up!

Squirrel, thats looking great! and thanks for the compliment.

The character has great upper torso form. I like the pose of the arms alot. The forearms appear to be a tad long. Maybe scale those back a bit.

When making a figure you really want to try and get the proportions as best as you can. I have a file that I keep with photos of bodybuilders, models, movie monsters, sci-fi pictures, animals etc. HAving a reference file like this comes in handy when you need to know what a particular bodypart should look like. You should start one youreself. They are a great resource.

Lets see, I think her waist needs to be centered up a bit more. It might be turned a little to far. Also you might want to give her some curvier hips.

Her thighs seem a bit thin. I guess you can tell I like a little curves in my women. Hheh

From the pic it might seem that her right breast may be a tad bigger than the other one but that could just be the angle of the pic.

The legs might need to be a little longer as well. Looks like you might run out of room with the armature. I've done that many times.

Also, not sure if you did this, but when making an armature I like to wrap some tin foil around the wire and take some thin wire and wrap around that. It really helps your clay adhere to your armature better and it saves you on clay.

All in all I say its looking great! I definately see alot of potential. Its all about practice, practice, paractic. You just gotta keep plugging away at it.

Remember to always use some good photo reference. Especially for faces. And you know another great idea is to maybe buy some real cool action figures like some that McFarlane makes and use them as reference. You can get some good ideas from them. You can get a pose and base your own creation off that.

Good luck and keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing some more of your sculpts.

wow, thanks a whole bunch for your crit, JohnC! yeh, i do wrap my aramture with tin foil also. and this is only my second sculpey sculpture ever, so perhaps its not that bad.

i actually cut the legs shorter cuz when i started they were way too long, but perhaps i cut too much.

the thigh comment is very much true. she is not very curvy, so i will be working on that.

and dag-nam-it your're RIGHT about the forearms being too damn long!! how come i didnt see that before? SHEESH!

once again thanx a whole bunch

No problem man. Thats damn good for your second sculpt man. You look like you definatly got the seedling skills. Now grow them.

About the forearms, sometimes you can look and look at something and never see a problem. The next day you take one look at it and go Damn! Thats way out of proportion.

Heres some tips on looking out for problem areas like that....

1 - Take pictures - I like to take my digital camera and take front, back, and side views of my sculpt and look at it in the computer. Sometimes you can see problem areas you never noticed before.

2 - Never over work a sculpture. I usually wont work on a sculpt past 4 or 5 hours at any one time. Its too easy to overdo something and ruin it.

3 - Take breaks. I will take a break about every hour or so.

4 - Never rush a sculpt. A good sculpture takes time and patience. Its always good to have it looking as good as it can before you bake it.

Take it easy and I look forward to seeing more of your sculpts.

P.S - All this talk of curvy women makes we want to sculpt one
