I just started a class called Advanced Life Drawing and would like you all to critique my drawing. This was from the first day of class.

If anyone is interested in life drawing, I can scan the syllabus, which has a whole bunch of photocopies we are assigned to draw throughout the quarter.

I have problems drawing facial features, as well as keeping things in proportion, but I'm working on it. If you have any suggestions on how to improve on those things, please let me know!

Your suppose to copy photocopies? wasn't it a life drawing class? Maybe you could explain.

Are u drawing w/ pencils? I'd recommend some charcoal so you can get more of a variation in tone. I use Ritmo charcoal pencils. There a little tough to find, in my area that is( only found one store that carried them). And drawing on a large pad of newsprint 18x24 inches.


Dealing w/ proportion, it seems fine in this picture. It's very hard though to tell the volume of the legs because they look flat. You should check out this website one of our generous members who scanned Andrew Loomis's book www.antsin3d.com/loomis Very helpful and inspirational.

I just came back from my life drawing class. Left early because no model showed up.

I am looking forward to taking Life Drawing here at my art school.

In the mean time, the best thing you can do to practice is look in the mirror and draw, go outside and draw people, or if aren't going directly for humans, draw anything else you see. If your school offers extended life drawing sessions weekly, attend those as much as you can.

Guess I should have worded my post better. The drawing above is from a live model pose in class, using a 2B pencil on newsprint (not recommended). Throughout the quarter, the instructor supplements the live model drawings by giving us handouts with facial expressions, eyes, hands, full figure poses, etc., and we're supposed to draw them exactly. It's to practice making a 2D picture look 3D, as I'm in an animation program.

I showed up to the 1st day of class with charcoal and 18x24 newsprint and the instructor said we needed an 11x14 drawing pad and a set of pencils (5H, HB, 2B, 6B, etc.).

So the model didn't show? What a waste of time. Tell your instructor to hire a new one! I'd be pissed.

My school doesn't offer any drawing classes where you can just come and draw, as it's a private school with a pretty rigid curriculum. However, I do live in the city and it's a great source for drawing people, dogs, whatever. Also, Art Students League has those types of classes, but they aren't free...
