i dont think its so much of her arms being short its just the rest of her body is elongated.. area's like the neck torso make her taller then i think she should be... no offense but she does kinda have a E.T. neck

I like the overall style, and it's refreshing to see a girl with a normal chest.

I agree that the neck is overly elongated. Although part of that is stylistic, and an "average" neck would actually seem a little weird in comparison to the lengthened torso, the neck still should probably be taken down a bit.

Is the lack of a mouth what keeps her so thin?

Cheers,

hehe.... actually the reason there is no mouth is because I think she looks nice that way (and I couldn't get a mouth to look good on her)

She's skinny because I have thing whing for drawing skinny people. (super skinny)

I think it is becuase I have never actually draw a real person.. or really even attempted to. So I don't know proportions very well... and I draw what i see in my head. ;p

Thanks though..

Ivey, second image I've seen from you. I quite like the style you got there.
Yeah, I think maybe raising the knee would be cool, just imagine if she folded her leg back, it would have to come up to her butt.
I'd love to see your characters animated, it's got serious potential.

Maybe look for some tutorials for drawing hands too.

Hands:
http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/hands/hands.htm

Feet: http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/feet/foot.htm

For the image i went surfing this mournin but the waves kinda sucked and there were some sharks feeding close to the shore so i didnt bother goin out.. The sunrise this mourning and the boardwalk just seemed to fit with ur picture so thats what i drew.

Everything that looks good is by Ivey everything else is prolly me

Bibbe: I agree, I am going to try drawing more legs

Spiritual Chaos: I draw cartoony things ;p I am trying more realistic stuff... but I wouldn't dare post it.

Christina Agulera? How?

Unit: I'm glad you liek it ;] When I get my site up I hope you'll visit. I am going to go to a coffee... hopefully I'll draw some legs there. I am attempting to do more animated pictures... I did a cupid a while back that is the most animated I have ever done... (out side of a guy sitting down.. he didn't have a head and there was a sign next to him that said "will work for food"... sybolism)

I think I should have gone darker with his skin.

Surferboi: I don't mind you drawing on it... kinda lets me know that people actually liek my art when they take the time to show me how to improve it. Thanks for the tutorials too ;]

She's actually for my web page... here's a mock up of how I want it to look

I really like the skin tones. Subtle, hinting at realism, but still stylized and cartoony. Nice job!

You might consider checking out Shane Gline's website for some amazing illustration work. I think you'll like his stuff.

Nicely done on the mouth. =)

Have you made any attempts to do the missing hands/feet yet, or are you going to do them last?

Hey Ivey!

That image is looking outstanding! The only real addition I would recommend would be to elongate the shin just a little... I always have a problem making legs too stubby (WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY moreso than yours, we're talking Danny DeVito).. other than that, it looks great!!! Keep up the killer work!

BTW -- when is your site going to be back up?

Ok - thought I'd put my two cents into this one. This is my last post for the forseeable future, but hope that this helps a bit.

I've included mocks of her with and "without" clothes to show how the legs go. Keep in mind that I tried hard to stay within the style guidelines of how you drew her... not sure if that worked. AGain, hope this helps.

That's PERFECT! VERY nice job, Ivey.. I'm impressed I've been working on some images and stuff, hopefully I'll get them scanned next week and I'll throw some of my stuff out here.

*Applauds Ivey*

----
DOH! Didn't realize that wasn't Ivey's drawing until I re-read it. Still, it looks great, both versions! As far as the legs, that's what I was talking about, keeping the lower part long.. looks great.

This is pretty cool, seeing everyone's take on the same image... I'll see if I can throw up my own (lousy) version tonight since I just acquired a scanner like 30 minutes ago.. Keep 'em coming!

Ivey > Frankly, I'm no pro and I'm of little help on that one. Imho Liquid manages to stand closer to your own style.
Your drawing is damn cute and the only difference (apart from the styles) that I see is that our 2 last ones are built following a sinuous pattern and from masses, not line works like yours *looks at Liquid, don't say you work with lines first or I can put a mickeymouse mask on from now on, please*
Maybe you should try this but it really is a matter of style and frankly you have a great stylized and cartoony one !

Ivey,

In answer to "what can I do to get better"?

Draw something... every single day. Spend at least an hour sketching. More if you can. It's what I've been trying to do, and I'm already noticing a drastic improvement. I'm almost back to the level I was at when I left art school in '96.

Keep everything you sketch. If you don't like it, don't look at it for a few weeks. Actually, even if you *do* like it, don't look at it for a few weeks. When you do go back to it, you'll notice the errors you made. At that point, you could try grabbing a sheet of tracing paper, and "fixing" those errors, or you could just make a mental note of them and try not to duplicate them in the future.

But the real truth is: practice. You're clearly talented, and this picture is very cute and nicely stylized. People like Joachim, and Liquid, and SoMK, and Sumaleth, and Jezebel, and etc etc didn't get as good as they did quickly (as I'm sure they'll attest). They did it by drawing... a lot... for a long period of time.

Oh, and keep posting cute chicks to the forums. We like them.

Cheers,

-shaithis

Uhh... me??? That must be some good crack you're smokin'! I don't belong along side the names you listed there. But I am extremely flattered

As for Ivey's drawing-

I just love this! You have such a cute style and I really enjoy seeing your work. The little characters like this just scream "Ivey!" all over.

Take another look at your wolf thread, Jez

But regardless of your own impressions of your skill, I think you'd agree with me that it's all about practice?

I actually wrote a rather long post and it got aced. So let me try to rewrite the points I was trying to make in a fairly cohesive manner. Please forgive the bullets, but I can't re-create the initial post again.

Here's what I would recommend in order to improve your drawing. Keep in mind this is just based on my own experience and observations:

1. Drawing is in the eye NOT the hand. You ever wonder why your drawings look a bit silly after about 3 months of not having looked at them? Bascially, I'd attribute that to two reasons. You gain some 'rest' for your eyes, but moreover I believe that your eyes continually become better judges of minute spatial relationships. Thus, they improve in judgment. So one of the most important things is to learn to "see" better. How? A.) Look at your drawing periodically in a hand-held mirror to get a 'fresh' look. [You'd be surprised how many BRILLIANT artists I know that STILL do that] B.) Flip your drawings and hold them up to the light, or over a lightbox for a similar effect. C.) Take advantage of all the critiques on this forum - there is a tremendous amount of talent here. In other words, 'borrow' other peoples eyes, and look at your work through theirs.

2. Re-draw your sketches/drawings based on critique received. Don't think to yourself that you'll fix it 'next' time. Why? By the time you run across the same problem again, you'll have forgotten whatever advice you've been given and you'll end up making the same mistakes over and over and over again. The downside to this is that it is REALLY BORING/MUNDANE to re-draw something several times. But I think you'll learn much quicker this way than any other...

Phew... sorry to sound a bit short, but re-typing the same thing twice is equally BORING/MUNDANE...

Keep in mind this is just my view for what its worth. As usual hope there's something useful here for you.

Liquid: Damn.. you put me to shame.. *sigh* and still learning how to draw... does it show that much? Thats very good... very much as to what I was going for.... And it will help me for the future.. thank you

TremorX:Hey! I am still working on my style... trying different things.. today i just started drawing people in class... but stupid me got all up set and threw the drawings away ;p

Faustgfx: *smile*

SoMK: well.. I am glad I inspired people... now tell me where I can get some of that talent! Seriously... what do I need to do to build skill? I am REALLY bad about throwing my drawings away... or deleting them... i guess thats bad.

That is ABSOLUTELY true about drawing every day and improving. I totally quit drawing entirely for almost a year, and I'm having a hard time 'remembering' how I did things, but I've started doing SOMETHING every day, even if it's just a layout sketch or something, just to get a feel for it and the way things flow. I have the SAME bad habit of tossing something if I get tired of working on it, even if I didn't really 'mess up'. I'll tend to lose sight of which direction I want to take the piece in, get bored, and chunk it. I should really quit that. I'm so glad I found this board, though.. it's been a major inspiration to get back into the habit!
