This is an old sketch I'm adding color to, mainly as an excuse to fiddle around w/Painter. I was probably bored in class when I drew this, so it's got a bit of Moebius, Bakshi, and Joust (the Atari game ) for good measure. I haven't really painted any outdoor scenes before, so I threw that in. I used textured paper at the beginning, but I'm not sure if I like the way that looks...

Any suggestions are welcome!

very nice sedone, love it. Kinda moebius motif.

I think it looks like you've improved a lot lately. You play much more with you pictures and make better sorroundings. I'm really glad you decided to be aforum geek again

Me likes !
reminds a lot of James Gurneys work (dinosourlike creature etc...) and there's some other memory of an old picture, i think it was featured in the AD&D first Edition Player's Guide...it was very similar to yours, anyways, nice pic, add a little more detail, would be kewl to have a detailed skin with bumps etc on that creature...

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. They were actually helpful!
I started to put some clouds in, and definitely took another pass at the creature's legs. The problem was that I didn't really define how the creature's body looked in the sketch. I think it's a lot better now.

burnOut, let's see the drawing you're talking about. I wouldn't mind some inspiration.

Joachim, thanks man, those are some encouraging words. I was in a funk for a while. Doing art became too much of a task, really. But for some reason I'm inspired again. And once a forum geek...

Anyway, here's my progress so far. I wish I could work on it all day, but I actually have assignments to do.

Keep those suggestions coming.

Actually, burnOut, that's pretty cool. The palette you chose is probably closer to the whole Moebius "look". Your shapes are also sharp and clear. I like the horns on your creature. Do you have a name for that thing? Thanks for posting the pic.

From now on I'll be replacing the in-progress picture in my second post to keep the thread from taking forever to load. This seems like a brilliant idea to me, but if it's common practice then forgive my ignorance.

Hmmm. I kinda like the loose pastle looking one better. Very cool either way. It reminds me of Gurney, the painter of Dinatopia.

Not sure if anyone is following this, but oh well.

The main thing I did today was rework his cloak. I liked the clean lines of burnOut's character, so I tried to simplify the shapes. The colors could use more work, so I'm going to meditate on that for a while.

Actually I like your very first picture better. It has more natural colors and lighting.

I like the first one - really dig the colors there. just one though : maybe you could add more backgrounds/space around the characters as they're just filling the whole image for the mo ( if you plan to carry on working on it )

The second is better. This is a great study. I cant wait to see more.

Crits: Keep refining those forms and keep in mind anatomy even when doing funny creatures.

It's surprising to me that so many people prefer the first pic. That would normally make me rethink what I'm doing, but every time I look at the second one I'm much happier with it. One reason is because it's much more finished than what I normally do. Next time I think I'll stick closer to the original palette I set down (which is usually pretty limited).

I'll work on this some more. Hopefully people will prefer it eventually?
