Can someone shed some light on how to achieve transparency with Photoshop. I know all about how to do it in photoshop however I can't seem to maintain transparency during the save process.
For instance if I go to save to web as... and I choose PNG24 with transparency on, all appears to be fine. However when I import into flash or open the file in photoshop, a matte background has been place in the image.
I am attempted to discover a way to produce some cloud images that I can use in Flash to mimic an atmosphere. I have seen this technique used on several awesome site but have not been able to discover how they are doing it.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Sincerely,
Tim |

Strange that it's not saving as transpartent.
It sounds like you are taking the correct steps.
I assume your image is on a seperate layer than the background layer.
If so make sure not to flatten the image before saving. Flattening automatically creates a solid bg.
Also make sure your background unchecked or set to transparent in photoshop.
If that doesn't work try merging visible and deleting any unused layers then save as a transparent png. |

I tried all of your suggestions but was unable to maintain transparency. This is really frustrating.
I could have sworn I had done this in the past... |

Hm, for PNG files, the transparency information isn't saved from layers, you need to manually create an Alpha channel for it.
Ctrl-click on the cloud layer to select its layer-Opacity information. then go to channels-tab. Click on "save selection as channel" icon. you'll get Alpha1 in the channels list, then save as PNG.
hope this works.

I did this recently with my own flash work. Save it as a png24 with transparency, then re-open it in photoshop and goto the channels pallete, there should be one for alpah or you create one. Go back to your image and copy it then back to the channels pallete and paste that into the alpha channel. You can modify the transparency in any way in this channel, just work on it like any other layer in photoshop. I also just discovered a way to make animated transparent raster images for use in flash using Adobe After FX 5. I'll have to include this tutorial in my upcoming website.
For now though, there is a great tutorial on the subject at phong.com .
Hope that helps. |
