hi, this is my first post on sijun, but I know the quality of the work made on this site, I've been using photoshop for 2 year now and working on my latest image, I got an error message when i tried to open the file. Photoshop said My scratch disks were full. I've tried rebooting and etc, but how can I fix this? Thanks

Hi Herbie
Welcome to the sijun forums
I had the same problem.
It' s easy to solve.
You now, the scrachdisk is the harddisk which is used for the virtual memory.
If this disk is full photoshop doesn#t work anymore or just very slow.
Solve it like this:
1st open photoshop - there you have to look which disk PhotoShop use for virtual memory. go on: edit - preferences - Plug-ins & Scrach disks.( I am not sure wich PS version you use. I describe for 7.0. I don't think there are big differences in this part of Photoshop.) Alright. You opened Plug-ins & Scrach disks. Now check wich disk Photoshop use for virtual memory. You have to look on the First: Startup -button. Normally it's C:// - I don't know how many harddisks you have but there are to ways to solve the problem.
First: Look in the temporary file of the harddisk Photoshop uses. Maybe Photoshop could't delete his cashefiles. They look like this: ~PST9295.tmp And they are big, something like 200mb is normal. If there are some of these: Delete them. They are inefficaciously. If you do not see any of these files check how much place is left on the disk. If it's under 100mb you have to delete some files you don't need anymore.
Second and easier way is to choose another faster and emtier disk. You can do that in the Plug-ins and Scrach disks option.
Only if you have more then one harddisks.
That's the ways to solve I know.
Hope I could help you.
Please post the picture you are working on when it's finished. I would like to see it.

PS: sorry for my damn bad english.
Edit* while these posts above me appeared I wrote on this message - so don't mind if I said something again.

If you happen to be using Win98, it often leaves large temporary files intact when it crashes... and it crashes quite a bit, especially when using a memory pusher like Photoshop. So, since the Photoshop scratch disk is essentially a temorary file, there may be some strays (never deleted, but should have been) hanging around on your hard drive. It's been awhile since I was on Win98... but look for filenames that start with the tilde "~" or end with it and files with a .tmp extension. Also look in your Windows temp directory and essentially delete everything in there. You probably have a lot more available room on your hard drive than you think... if you're using Win98.
As mentioned in an earlier post, it works well to set aside a few gig of harddrive space in a separate partrition and assign Photoshop's scratch disk location to that partion.... and don't use it for anything else. |

Thanks loads guys, I'll post my work on here when i'm done, although its for a game called counter-strike and for a site called www.zerochaos.co.uk you may still want to take a look at it. But for now, I'll post you an image I made for the same site... It is just renders and airbrushing, and some effects applied to the text (as I basically have no creativity or skill)

thanks for your help |

sometimes my piece of shit copy of PS defaults the main scratch disk to start up. just go to edit/prefrences/plug-ins scratch disks and set the first one to the disk that you have the most space on... try that |

i have a seperate 2Gb Partition for my PS scratch.. not filled it yet..
Photoshop needs the same amount of HDD space (or more) as you have RAM allocated to it in order to work.. so if your PS has 512Mb RAM it needs 512Mb of scratch free to work.. |
