Personally I would say that XP is the spawn of satan and that it should be fought of with a very big stick wherever it is found... though I've heard other people contradict this... but I'll put that down to general delusion
I did notice that photoshop was slower in XP on my machine... even though it's a fairly old machine (700 mhz, 256 ram) it works great in 2k... The wacom just didn't feel like it followed as good as it usually does...
thus, my personal recommendation would be w2k instead of XP... I think Philip Williams (eyewoo) uses Xp and is quite happy with that, but he also has the machine of the century to work with, so pshaw on him =) |

Yup! Quite happy with it - XP Pro. It did take a while to get the printing to work properly. Printing seems to be a problem, but I think it has more to do with manufacturers' print drivers not working correctly on XP than XP not working properly. At any rate I've solved the problems and printing now works well for me.
Windows 98 would crash and burn up to 4 or 5 times a day for me. With XP I restart the machine once or twice a week. |

Yeah, peripherals seem to be a problem with XP, but then again I'm talking about some old ass peripherals here. It took me a while to get multi-monitor going because I had to find some hacked ATI drivers. I can't seem to get my scanner working, but what do you expect from a crap $50 scanner.
Aside from that, I can't imagine going back to 98. I used to think I had a fairly smooth running system with Win98 (y'know, 2-3 crashes a day). What a joke. With XP, I'm using Photoshop, posting on this forum, and playing Super Puzzle Fighter in a cute lil' window, and the only reason I've had to reboot is from old habits I've gotten from Win98. It may take some tweaking at first, but it's worth it. But make sure you have a fast system with lots of ram . |

Havent used XP as my machine is oldish so I thought that 2000 would use up less RAM.
But just wanted to confirm that when moving from 98 to 2000, just like eyewoo my daily crashes become (literally) my monthly crash. It is *by far* the most stable OS I've ever used (& I've used macs & Unix machines too). It's lovely. |

Ok. I'v installed XP. I must say I'm impressed how good it actually recognises the hardware. In 98 I had to install graphics driver, audio driver and get the internet working. But here it worked instantly.
BUT since my comp is only a 450 Mhz P3 128 MB ram (you can laugh now) I'm thinking about going back to win98. In the installation-process it came up with some problems for some of my hardware (not being compatible..blah blah).
I've ordered an Intuos2 A5 so I'll be needing a new PC sooner or later. Then I'll might go for the WiN2k - instead of it's cartoon sister (XP that is). |

I'm using XP, and once you've managed to get some understanding of all the tricky automatic processes it does, then it's actually very nice. I've never had any problems with printing on it either, which happened all the time before.
But I do think that photoshop is running slightly slower. |

Is there anything win 2k isn't good for? How 'bout gaming - is it ok for games?
'Cos I don't want a OS that's only for Photoshoping. |

I got a state of the art new machine And bought a WACOM Graphire2, just to start with experimenting with a tablet. I also got XP running.
Does anyone know what the best setup is with the WACOM tablet ? Seems that the feel isn't right ... maybe cause i need to get used to the tablet, but somehow it feels non real.
oh .. btw. i never realy did draw much, but looking at this forum you guys made me wanna draw and stuff |

XP is rock solid. I have very little problems with it.
2000 and games...forget it! They run MUCH slower in 2k than in XP!

sukhoi: they may run slower, but I've never had any problems with speed... and my puter isn't that fast... for me 2k has been the best thing since sliced bread, all categories |
