I call this the "Phil Hale" syndrome: an artist that is well respected and known, but hard to find images of on the internet. It boggles my mind why some of these brilliant artists are ignored on the internet, while you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Boris/Julie Bell/Rowena fan site. I mean, WTF, you know?
So, I've decided to start a list of artists that I would love to see more works of on the internet, and hopefully as we all add to this list, we can pool our 6,000+ members' efforts together and hunt down some cool images/links by these deserving talents. If some of you have stuff you can scan in or make webpages, that would be awesome too.
Here's my list so far:
Jon J. Muth- known for his work in comics(Moonshadow, Dracula, Mystery Play..etc). He is an excellent painter with great sensibilities.
Muth
Haddon Sundblom- the man that taught Gil Elvgren. Master illustrator that's known for his Coca Cola Santas. I prefer his non-Santa stuff a lot more though.
Sundblom
Yamashita Ikuto- Known for his mechanical designs on Evangelion, but his 2 volume "Dark Whisper" cyberpunk comic is the real gem that most don't know about.
Phil Hale- Need I say it? I've seen no less than 5 to 7 sijun members mentioning in various posts something along the line of "I was trying to hunt down some Phil Hale stuff when I stumbled upon..." I'm one of the Hale admirers who came up with NOTHING in my internet search.
Harry Anderson- another kickass classic illustrator.
Anderson
Pino Dangelico- Awesome painter mostly known for his romance novel covers.
Dangelico
Steve Assel- You can find his fine arts stuff under Steve Assael, but you can't find his illustration work under his other name ASSEL. He uses that to seperate his commercial work from his fine arts stuff.
Assel
Jon Paul- His style is very similar to Assel's commercial work. Another romance novel guy.
Paul
Nelson Shanks- He's got his own website, but with just a handful of works. He's a big name, so shouldn't there be more?
Shanks
Richard Schmid- Yes, I already have the book, but I'm sure he's done a lot more since then, and I wanna see!
Schmid

Stephen Youll- As well known as he is, especially with a book released, I'm very surprised why I can't find JACK on his stuff. Same with his twin brother Paul.
Dorian Vallejo- I found his fine art portrait site, but WHERE the F is his fantasy/sci-fi stuff??? He told me he loves fantasy illustration and he'll get back into it, so that's reassuring at least. (BTW, he didn't like the fact people are talking shit about his dad and step-mom. He adores his father's talent and work, and loves him very much. I told him I think he's better than his dad, and even though he liked the compliment, he still was unhappy I had negative things to say about Boris's work.)
Dorian
Robh Ruppel- Master painter of Advanced D&D, Planescape..etc. I have his cardset, and that's all I can find(other than the TSR book). He promised to get a site up, and that was over a year ago. I don't want to hound the guy, but I need my Ruppel fix! It's so sad a talent like him has to resort to working for Disney when he should be painting masterpieces. *sigh*
Ruppel
Nirasawa Yasushi- Why there isn't a site dedicated to his sculptures is beyond me. He should be at LEAST as popular as Brom is. All those dark fantasy/horror/fetish guys owe him bigtime.
Nirasawa
Bobby Toomb- I have a print of his, and it is breathtaking. He is the ONLY student ever taught by Gil Elvgren. I've found a couple of images accredited to him, but is so obviously not his work(they were REALLY horrible--nothing like his work).
Andrew Loomis- We have several sites with his instructional books, but WTF are his paintings and illustrations??
Mike Evans- Ok, he's unknown other than the couple of pieces in Spectrum, but this one piece with the female soldier hugging the dead lover's corpse...WOW. It is SO rare to see fantasy/sci-fi work with that kind of emotional impact. Anyone have a link? Last I heard, the dude has turned into a photo-manip guy and abandoned oil painting. Anyone can confirm this?
Evans
Glen Orbik- another great fantasy/sci-fi painter. His TSR stuff was great.
Orbik
Frederick Soulacroix- I've only seen about 3 images of his. Sure, he's all style and no substance(as some would say about Sargent), but look at that techniique.
Soulacroix
Boston Painters of late 19th/early 20th century- These guys held the fort while modern art was taking over the art scene. Sargent was friends with them, but they never thought of Sargent as one of them. The following were the leaders of the movement: Joseph Decamp, Edmund C. Tarbell, William McGregor Paxton, Frank W. Benson, Thomas Wilmer Dewing..etc. You can hardly find anything on them, and I hope that'll change eventually.
DeCamp
Benson

Dewing
Paxton
Tarbell
Anyways, this has bothered me for sometime now, so I thought I'd just get it off my chest. It's also a great opportunity to share some unknown artwork with my fellow sijuners.
Now, let's see if more could be added to this list, and if cool images/links could be uncovered. |

isn't that odd? that painting was done by pino the romance book cover artist.
i use to paint with dorian in new york, great guy. steve assael was our teacher, 10 years apart (dorian's about 10 years older than me)
nelson shanks is a great draftsmen and teaches a class at the art students league, i heard he was a grade A flatterer, the patrons love him.
as for artists i'd like to see more artwork on line, number one on the list would be iain Mccaig. number two would be my old teacher Max ginsburg (also taught steve and dorian and many other superstar artists) |

Isn't Ian Mccaig working on a webpage?
It was brought up here before, by pro if im not mistaken. To be able to create creatures and give them life the way he does is just incredible..
Check out Anders Zorn if you want to look at some good paintings...He even drew 2 US presidents during his life (and not from photos)

jr- dude, you are so lucky. I wish I could have an art education in New York too. . .. Man, to have youth AND an awesome enviroment.
Yeah, talk about Pino going for the opposite extreme in his personal work!
I'd love to see some Max Ginsburg online too! I've only seen about 3 images in the past online. You have any to share?
Returner- I'm a big Zorn fan. I have a really expensive monograph on him imported from Sweden. I didn't list him because it's pretty easy to find his stuff online these days.

Hey cool, that thread comes in handy. I was also surprised that I cant find anything on the net about certain artists:
Ugurcan Yce - He made cover and box artworks for the pen&paper RPG universe DSA (Das Schwarze Auge / Realms of Arkania) and also for the DSA computer games.
Celal Kandemiroglu - He made the cover artwork for the old reLINE RPGs 'Legend of Faerghail' and 'Fate Gates of Dawn'. I think he works for a game company (not quite sure) and I would like to see more stuff from him.
And perhaps someone finds these links useful: http://www.imagenetion.com/ http://www.fantasya.net/
There you can find a lot fantasy art sorted by artists. |

Awesome links!
MadSamoan- Lipking looks like he could be a student of Schmid's? It didn't say so in his bio, so I guess not.
That Pino link is great! WOW.
I just read that Lipking is self-taught, and Schmid is one of his influences, along with Zorn, Sargent, and a few others.

A couple artists I think should be online (I don't think they are) are Maggie White and *?* Folks(sp?). They were two of my mom's art teachers. They've got some beautiful paintings out there. |

There sure are a lot of artists I don't know about. These guys are great. I have a book with some Angus McBride paintings in them. He did artwork for ICE roleplaying games. His style kinda has a Rockwell feel to it. |

Good to see Dorian mentioned. I saw a couple of his scifi images a few years back and they were fantastic (one is the image Luna linked above) and certainly a lot more refreshing than the now somewhat stale style of Boris. But since then I havent been able to find more than about 2-3 images by Dorian.

Sumaleth-- he's currently doing fine art portraits. His site:
http://doriansportraits.com
He wants to get back into fantasy illustration, but portraits pay his bills. I hope his career will take off again in the fantasy field. He's a really nice guy and a great talent, and I think the fantasy/sci-fi world is missing out on what he has to offer. He told me that the reason why he's staying out is partly because of his frustration dealing with the nature of freelance work--having to compromise. He might have mentioned more detail, but I think I deleted his old emails. I'll ask him what his plans are for 2002 as far as illustration goes. I also just emailed him asking if he could put up some of his illustrations stuff for us to gawk at. |

Lunatique, that's pretty funny that you call it the "Phil Hale" syndrome. BooMSticK and I were just talking in email about how difficult it was to find his work. For those interested, Phil Hale's new book GOAD - The Many Moods of Phil Hale supposedly started shipping last month from Grant Books.

Lunatique,
Jeremy's not self taught although he's the son of an illustrator. He was considering a career in music (a friend of his is the lead singer of Incubus), but he went into fine art instead, trained at The California Art Institute and now teaches there when he's not traveling. He's definitely influenced by Schmid and I imagine he's attended his workshops and I know Fechin is a big influence as well. I just started attending the school myself this year and there's alot of his pencil and oil studies around as well as a few of his early student works. It's inspiring seeing the progression. This is also the same school that guys like Glen Orbik, Greg Pro, Morgan Weistling, Paul Wee, Mark Westermore, Jeff Watts trained or taught at. |

MadSamoan- Hmm, I wonder why his biography says he's "self-taught." Weird. Maybe I'm mixing him up with another artist?
Sumaleth- I just got an email from Dorian, and here's a few answers for ya:
"Wow! I was just thinking of you I can't believe you wrote. Thanks as always for the compliments. As for my former work I never like living in the past so I can't really drum up the enthusiasm for creating a site that would show my old work. It has nothing at all what so ever to do with the fine art market (which is just as commercial as anything else - no matter what anybody says). Besides, even it it did effect what people thought of my work, it's not in my personality to deny anything I've ever done artistically. Blah blah blah but let me go on for a little bit longer. When I was doing the illustration I made a promise to myself to never hand in a job that wasn't absolutely my best effort. Each painting had to be better then the last and I had to learn something new from each one. As a result I was never on time for a single job. But people like your self and others noticed. I stopped for many reasons but among them was the realization that I couldn't make a good living in an industry that didn't reward my artistic integrity."
"That said I do have plans for the future. I can't keep doing the portraits the way I've been doing them. I work from life as often as I can. This week ill have models almost everyday. in terms of the sci fi fantasy stuff I do have things planed - new and completely mine."
So there, we can expect some cool shit from him in the future. |

think he'll let me wash his brushes?
I don't take up much space.
I'm serious, I would love to wash brushes
for someone that talented. Could you
imagine the inspiration you would have?
To totaly consume every moment of your
life doing and studying art under a master
would be a dream come true, sort of
like that other dream of being a master.
