now that's a hard question...
it's not hard because painting eyes is hard.. it is because i did it so often that i don't know exactly
as i come from drawing and manga, i usually put a lot of the weight to the eyes. i'd say it's some kind of whiteish (not pure white) ball with skinfolds around it and that has a circle of some multicolored gradients and some highlights on it.
and all this can express feelings.
i have no clue what it is exactly about drawing/painting eyes but i remember myself sitting there for hours, filling papers with lots of eyes. more comic-rendered, sometimes going for realism, always going for life.

i also remember a lot of drawings where i didn't really draw eyes per se but just came up with some kind of "wish-washing some grey values" something without form or contour... just something that looks like an eye.
