Hi all... I know this subject has been beaten to death here, but the answers also change continuously. So indulge a Sijun Ol' Timer and take a few seconds to lend an opinion, k? >8)
I'm building a new machine, probably a P4 Northwood (PLEASE: I am not looking for an AMD vs. P4 thread here - I know the pro/cons of both) and I'm pretty much decided on a RAID-0 array for applications and a separate IDE drive for just OS & utility apps. My main concern is with the selection of a Motherboard & RAM. The current crop of chipsets and RAM configs are making my head spin. It just seems to get more confused everyday (Intel announced today they may dump RAMBUS - pfft).
All I really need the machine for is Photoshop, some web development work (very small footprint apps - text editor, ftp, etc), and I usually have maybe one game installed at a time (Tribes 2 currently).
What would you go with? $$ isn't too much of a concern, although I'm not looking to blow a ton of it unnecessarily. Does anyone have any experience comparing DDR & RAMBUS when it comes to Photoshop? Whatever memory I go with, I'm planning on at least 1gb.
Thanks in advance... |

rambus is a bit more pricey than DDR...and not much of a difference in performance that i've seen. if it were me, i'd stick with ddr. sounds like good hardware config, though i think the OS should be on the raid0 config as well as the appz...you may get a bottleneck effect if you put it on a seperate ide connection...plus it wouldn't speed up the appz real well vs having it on the raid0 drive(s). anyways, just my opinion..have fun...i know i would if i could afford it =) |

That's what I used to think about RAMBUS too Fire, but it's just not true. It used to be, but prices have come way down. Not to mention DDR just can't compete with RAMBUS in performance, from what I'm reading. And if Intel did in fact dump RAMBUS recently, that ought to make their chip prices take a wicked dive south, yeah?
Alas... this might now be a dead subject. All this research led me to near madness today, so I just went and snagged an Asus P4T-E. I'm sick of looking into it while my PII-450 begins showing signs of imminent death. I'm just going to leap. Wish me luck >8\
