A good training session is to draw everything in view 180 degrees turned. Abstracting is easier that way.

Take a moment to observe these images for a few seconds.

This is an illusion I saw in Discover magazine about a month ago and I thought it was applicable to most of us. I did a search on images.google.com for head, took it into Photoshop and flipped the eyes and mouth.

Our brain does a lot with the images our eyes show it. Its freaky to think that the images we see everyday are a translation of what our eyes are showing to our brain. It is very evident in this picture. No. 1 and No. 4 are the same, No. 2 and No. 3 are the same as well. No. 2 jumps out immediately as the incorrect picture where as No. 3 kind of hides in the background. Why is this?

We gather so much information through sight, our subconscious brain filters this information, zooming in on detailed areas and blurring out non-important areas. This is a stumbling block for all artists, redefining the filters that our brain has in place, relearning to see. This is why we do blind contours that seem like such a waste of time.

What are some other activities that artists do in order to retrain our brain?

Just a thought,
