hi everyone.
there is something i wondering in this month.
when i draw with a reference. i draw what is in the referent picture.
but then, many critic tells me what it should be and how should it be position or how should it be drew.
this just confuse me. why do we draw something that is not what see from our eyes, and instead drawing something that our mind think is nice.
in other words, we are not drawing the actual thing, we just draw what we thing it should be.
is that right or wrong.
i personally, thing thats not good. because thats a lie. totally missed the point of drawing something it is like a lie. why do still draw if we change what it really looks like.!! |

Why do we still need photography if we can draw perfectly realistic? When you draw according to what you think looks nice, your work became something you don't see from nature, and it became your own. That's just my opinion. |

JD Leon:
When you say that critics told you to move certain things around, were they talking about the overall composition of the image? or were they talking about individual things? like..."The legs are too long, shorten them."
They may well be incorrect if you drew from your reference accurately and they still pick on anatomy issues. Perhaps they may be right though because you may well have drawn something incorrectly and many ppl can see this due to their experience with anatomy... etc.
Quite often artists change the way a picture is structured (composition), in order to make it more pleasing to the eye. OR to illustrate a particular effect, to make an emphasis on a particular element of the picture.
Achri also has a good point about realistic drawing. Why do we need to be able to draw realistically when we could just use a camera? Therefore artists may change, for example the size of a characters muscles in order to emphasise the characters strength, and that is something that a camera may not always be able to do.
Of course it is useful to be able to draw realistically, so that we can invent an imaginary scene that we could not photograph at all.
I hope that helps... |

i see you guys' points!
here is more detail about what i mean.
for example. when i draw a picture of a woman, some time peopple would think: ohh that hand at that position isn't nice, put it to other place. or that eye look strange "CHANGE" it.
see my point? they are trying to change what it is to what they think is nice.
my little point of view of photographing:
i think drawing is use to replay photo graphing, in my opinion the world our eyes see isn't perfect. therefore we draw, we draw the only beatiful thing that we see and NOT CHANGE HOW IT LOOK.
this is what i think.
does this ever apear to you? no picture taken from the real world is perfect, but a picture that a drew by an artist's hand could be perfect.! hehe. enjoy, hope this doesn't stop u sleep tonight! |

I think you've already answered your own question.

The reason you need to change things in your work is because they might not be perfect, or someone thinks it's not perfect. I can see you're talking about changing the anatomy or whatnot, not adding horn to someone's face, so when someone said your anatomy is wrong, you might want to consider changing it. Because, as you said, you want to draw something that looks nice.
I won't lose any sleep over this, thanks very much for being so considerate!!!1!
