I went to the museum today with my dad. We went to the Asian section first, since that is his greatest interest. Then we walked around Helenistic sculpture before finally ending up at my favorite, the turn of the century, non impressionist paintings.
Funny, I've been to that museum dozens of times, but I had never seen it before. But this time, as soon as I walked into the gallery, it stood out above all the other paintings around it. It was "A Girl Eating Porridge" (couldn't find it on ARC or the net). I had never seen that particular one before, anyway. But you could instantly tell who it was, without reading the plate.
There were no brush strokes visible, even up close. None of those fuzzy edges caused by the bite of the canvas. At first I thought the spotlights above me were casting a warm spotlight onto the picture, but then I realized it was Bouguereau's color making the light. It was incredible. Beyond my words really.
A man without even a single mention in my art history textbook, a book with almost an entire chapter dedicated to Andy Warhol. |

your art book is shit.
the reason bouguereau's paintings are so smooth and that you can't see the brush strokes is that he painted on a medium called Siccatif de Coutrai. which is basically a drying medium that turns your paintings into doodoo in no time. but no one is really sure how bouguereau's paintings survive and in the great shape that they are in. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, greatness! |

You sure said a mouthful. Then again, the same was true about my entire college curriculum. |

Key word in that sentence... 'completed'... I wonder what his total volume of work was. Absolutely amazing. Yeah, I'm pretty envious of the folks who get to see them up close and personal... |

Yeah Shizo, he's only one of the greatest painters to ever live. Can't be that great. IMO

Shizo-- Dude! Don't, like, put your foot in your mouth so eagerly. You could've taken a look around the net for Bouguereau's paintings before you shoved that foot in. Doh! You're still ok in my book, buddy. |
