Hi all,
I have a few questions about web-portfolios. Has anyone actually approaced publishers with one successfully? Did you query first or just send the URL? Very few places have explicit instructions for digital portfolios, I've noticed.
Is it more effective to send a publisher to your site proper, or to a specific portfolio page? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have been looking at different criteria that studios look for in a portfolio and most of them rather see one in paper. I mean it saves a hell of alot of time for them then to take a cd-rom and load it in and crap. Im sure if you give your url with a paper portfolio they would give it a look though. But if you just send a url i doubt they would even look at your submission and even if they do what happens if the servers down and all . would they have patience to wait for it to come up. |

err i mean I would just send a printed version of your portfolio rather than digital. Lot of errors can happen. For example : Their screnn brightness isnt the same as your and can make drawings look crappy. COmputer too slow. Its also a question of information. If you put all your info on the cd rom well if they just need your info they will have to load it in ect.. when they could just have it on a peace of paper and such..
All im saying digital portfolio might look nice and well cared for but can be a waste of time for you and the employer in question.
sorry if i confused you...

I agree that sending a paper portfolio is the way to go for static work. I work on posters and such things, so if i was to send a publisher a proposal i would send a letter sized print for each painting or maybe one page with a few paintings on it, although i like the publisher to see what the "product" is going to look like printed closer to actual size.

I'm involved in hiring artists at Bioware Corp. (we make games). We have never hired *anyone* based soley on a web portfolio, and probably never will. (Until bandwidth makes download intantaneous - or faster than plugging in VHS).
It's too slow to interuppt a session of slush tapes and portfolio's to go look at a web page.
Print for 2D and Video for 3D is the only way to go.

I showed off my site and I have done pretty well. I think my site sucks ass too!
If you haven't made a site, at least try it out. Don't try = Don't Get.
