Hi, I just love this forum, love everyone's work (well, most of it ), and I also have one question;

WHY IS EVERYONE HOSTING THEIR PICTURES ON GEOCITIES.COM???

Oh, wait... I have another one; Why are all of you recommending new users to host their stuff on Geocities??? It takes very much time to load from Geocities here with my provider, and often the pictures are just deleted on can't be displayed. I wonder if you are having a whole other experience with Geocities.

I have my stuff on geocities and moving it all to Tripod. For linking stuff. its a bit faster.

I noticed that Geocities has been crapping out this week. It's pissing me off.

I am now using V3space (100mb) For my web space. But you can't link out to these forums.

Damn Geocities!

Crap, I haven't tested the tripod one yet!

We'll the damn Geocites has been screwing up!
It will work then it won't. Wazz-Up with that!

tested V3space and Tripod and they don't work!

they will work if the Tripod or V3space website is open. But if not then you'll get nothing.

As much as I hate Geocities, it is one of the fastest free servers up. And it doesn't do nasty things...like angelfire or anything.

NEWS FROM YAHOO!

Why won't my files load when I try to link to them outside of GeoCities?
_______________

Unfortunately, this is not allowed. We've made changes to our system that prohibit certain files from loading outside of our domain (geocities.com). This means that some of the files stored in your Yahoo! GeoCities directory can't be referenced directly from links outside of geocities.com. However, these files will remain accessible from any geocities.com web page.
This change ensures that our resources are supporting visitors to Yahoo! GeoCities web pages and providing them with the best possible experience.

I know why your files won't load. the Geocities link is CASE SENSITIVE. So screenshot2.JPG would cannot be spelled screenshot2.jpg. The whole thing is case sensitive so be careful. I don't have any problems loading files in.

I stopped using Geocities since Yahoo took over... anyway I have no problem linking images to my tripod acount and I find tripod quite fast. Also, a while ago tripod expanded from 16 megs to 50 megs. Also if you use a redirection to your website on tripod the ads they put on won't show up (pop-ups only)

Personally, I have major problems with Tripod AND Geocities. They are extremely slow or just don't show the pics.

I loaded this from geocities, let's see if there is a problem. Please wait.....

Ok, didn't work. Now let's try it with the extension in caps. The way it was loaded to geocities.

Well boys and girls it seems geocities has joined the ranks of "Thanks for uploading to Geocities, too bad you can't use your files" gang. If this is the case, I'm closing my account with them and mass emailing everyone I know to do the same.

These are the reasons I chose Geocities.

In the beginning, I wasn't very Internet savvy. I heard about Tripod, AngelFire, Xoom, and Geocities. My friends told me that some host would cancel your free account if you do not update your site frequently. Seeing that Geocities does not make it compulsory to update frequently, I chose it. It has more storage space than AngelFire. AngelFire offered 5MB while Geocities offered 10 or 12MBs at first and later increased to 15 Megabytes. In addition, they also adopted the feature to allow your username or a name of your choice with a '/' right after www.geocities.com as a shorter URL for your site. Geocities other attraction perhaps may be its file manager interface which I think is well designed. The loading problems from Geocities is merely minor setbacks at certain times. Much like many other servers. For the most of the time, Geocities is rather reliable.

The other reason is because I felt that Geocities would be a long lasting host as it is large, popular, well known and is now acquired and managed by a big company such as Yahoo! I assumed that this would ensure I would be able to have my site on the Net for a long time as I suppose Geocities would not become unprofitable and not well managed and cease to provide free services in the immediate future. This in turn would cancel the need for me to change host and go through the hassle of transferring my files to another host should my current host cease operation. Not to mention the inconvenience in notifying my visitors of the relocation.
Recently, Go.com closed down and some of my friends are now busy moving to other hosts.

I understand their reasons in disabling direct linking from outside. This is only to ensure that everyfile or page that is on Geocities would be advertisable as advertisement from sponsors is the main fund to allow free hosting of sites. I also heard that direct image linking takes up bandwidth. However, I am not too certain what that implies.

Yes, it is indeed a big change for me and others. I suppose we just have to adapt to it or find another host.I'm considering the need for a change.
