Was warming up with a painting inspired by the inside of the Gladiator Sountrack CD cover. I had it sitting in front of me when I was thinking of something to do so I just started a painting based loosely on the basics of the image. Didn't even try to make it look much like Crowe but I might go back later and render this thing to a finished level if anybody thinks it's worth it Anyway, thought I'd share this so have at it.

and I went ahead and scanned in the jacket assuming everybody doesn't have the CD I'm talking about...

I like it as it is. Really strong sense of light and great snowy atmosphere. I'm assuming it's snow at least. Anyway, Snow looks great but I keep thinking ther eisn't enough snow on the trees and footprints maybe? Btw, the 2nd image of the cd cover isn't workign so.. my crits may be off. But yah, it definitely is worth the time to continue on as it looks extremely promising at this point.

This image is looking good but I think it could be improved 110% if you were to change the background from the bright white you currently have to something very close to white. Because of the white bg, it's making it look slightly unfinished.

Thanks for the comments, Eviltoylet. Yeah, that's snow you're seeing there. I didn't do much of anything to the trees though, that'll come if I finish up this piece. For now they just have a midtone, a dark and a light color brushed in to get the basics in...I have to force myself to work loose and simple because I tend to render right off the bat. Oh, and the cover link should work now, I was fixing that probably as you were replying

[edit] thanks Jezebel, I'll make sure to change it to something a little darker or with some tinge of color to it. I just wanna make sure to keep that foggy feel that the reference has.

Nice Flint! It's a nice painting, planning on coloring it or just an exercise?

Well, I was about to get to work on something else and I took a look at the reference side by side with the painting for the first time (I didn't look at the reference much and it wasn't in the computer until just before I posted).

I noticed so many more things I should have done to add some more to the ground so I spent another 15 mins adding some detail to the trees and the ground and fooled around with the background a bit.

I think I'll end up sizing this thing up (it's at 800x600) and making it an actual painting, maybe replacing Maximus with an original character. I guess that answers your question, Frost Thanks for the comment and yes, this was supposed to be just an exercise to get warmed up but now I'm sucked in. Ever since I've had this CD I've loved the image there...the set, the colors, the pose...I had to try a painting of my own with the basics of this one in mind. No better time like the present I suppose.

Anyway, I'll shut up now and give you the update:

*it looks so much better when I zoom out, heh*

You need to darken the shadow around the feet. The shadow should be darkest when it is closer to the light source.. look at the pic.

good movie, for starters.

Nice pic. You have a good sense of proportion. I would agree with Chapel about the shadow.

One comment though on the characters stance.

I know the scanned image shows the character slightly leaning back, kind of back arched. But I think that this is awkward and I would suggest adjusting the stance so that he isnt quite so arched.

Hope this elllps.

I think the pose is a bit wrong. In the original Crowe is putting his wheight on his left foot and his right is a bit raised.
On your he is putting all his whight on the feet and the back is arched.
Hope this helps.
