Here are some new sketches and pencil renderings I made. The originals were by Julie Bell, Brom, and Frazetta.
The pictures were slightly larger then the scanner could handle so some of the composition was lost on a few of these.
I decided to show 2 clippings of the copy from Brom. It still misses some on the right and left of picture.
Anyway, I liked these even if they have some problems. I'm working on trying to get better and better pencil rendering. If anyone has technique/suggetions then would like to hear.

Keep working on your basic anatomy..lighting..perspective ..light/dark values..etc..etc..you still have a ways to go. Start with your anatomy though as your frazetta bear pic copy is not even recognizable as a human..sorry if I offend you. |

Hi. I was able to track down the originals for the brom and frazetta pics, and it looks like your main problem is that you tend to make people too skinny. (I do the same thing when copying another image.)
There are a few tricks to getting around this problem. I don't know if you've heard this, but if you copy a picture up-side down, it's much easier, because your brain isn't getting in your way and telling you "Hey! I know how an arm looks! I'll draw it from memory instead of really paying attention to this picture!" Then you screw it up. Unfortunately, while copying a picture up-side down will give you better results, it doesn't really help you draw better in the long run. (Though it's a fun exercize.)
The two biggest things that helped me early on (and still do) are these: First, sketch the whole from before going into details, and second, pay attention to negative space. As far as sketching it first, this is REALLY important. Don't even try to put down any lines that you plan on having in the finished piece. Draw a circle for the head, then make a few more circles to refine it. Draw long, gestural strokes for the body, once again not laying down any specific outlines, but essentially laying a guideline for "where the form will be." It's SO much faster to just draw quick ovals for the whole body than to meticulously trace the outline, and it's much easier to adjust the guidelines (which should be drawn really light anyway) than it is to move an arm which you just spent 20 minutes shading.
The second bit, looking at negative space, will come in handy a little bit later. Instead of looking at the shape of the arm (on your Brom pic, for example), look at the shape of the hole between the arm and the body. Look at the space around his head, instead of the space within his head. Then draw the outline of the SPACE - it'll surprise you how much more accurately you can get an outline using this method, and from there, you can fill in the form.
Whoo. Enough typing for one night. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work. |

Hmm, yeah. On the fraz pic when i piped the legs I made them too long. I, also lost the form of the leg when shading and the pipe of the arm. The face was small and I had to go over several passes to get it dark.. so I lost some form there too.
On the brom picture the torso is too long and shoulders are slightly off. I also didnt constrict the pipe enuff at the bottom of leg. Hmm, on bell picture the right eye is a little small.
I'll have to be neater in my shadings next time but still like these. Anyone have pencil shading techniques or renderings? |
