What is the best way to create monochromes in Photoshop?

Using the Hue/Saturation dialog is one, but I'd like to know better ways.

You mean how to make a color image into B/W?

There are four ways, as far as I know. One, like you said, use the Hue/Saturation dialog. Two, hit "Desaturate" (same effect, I think.) Three, convert it to a grayscale image. This handles the relative R/G/B values differently than desaturate does. Four, add a new layer on top of your image, fill it with gray, and change the blending mode to "saturation".
