I know many of you do comic art, so this may pique your interest.
In spring 2000, over a hundred of the web's best comic pencillers, inkers and colorists came together for an art contest by Andy Bui to produce some beautiful, beautiful art to be judged by comic professionals and have some fun in the process.
The first day of the new millenium, 01.01.01, many of these artists, and hopefully numerous new ones will join in on the next contest in this presigious line. Andy has passed me the lead on this one and myself and the rest of seraph seven are doing everything in our power to make this the biggest and most successful yet.
I apologize for the fact that I won't be able to answer questions in this thread as I'm walking out the door for Costa Rica in under an hour or so...
You should also know that BDP's contest will be held later due to time his constraints.
The judges chosen for this contest we think reflect some of the biggest and brightest names in comics who will make an impartial and informed decision regarding your art. And so, without further ado, the long-awaited judge list for the art.contest.2000!
-pencils-
KIN writer and penciller, and currently on highly acclaimed Midnight Nation, the undeniable Gary Frank.
One of my favorite new artists out there, the dynamic b]Pop Mhan of Spyboy fame!
Penciller of Warlands and head honcho at Dreamwave Productions, Pat Lee...
-and-
Artist of Top Cow Prod's blockbuster Tomb Raider, Andy Park.
-inks-
Inker extrodinaire, co-founder of Marvel's Marvel Knights, currently of Ennis' Punisher and a household comics name, Jimmy Palmiotti!
Probably the most electrifying up-and-coming inker in comics today fresh off Ale Garza's Spiderman/Marrow, Pierre-Andre Dery.
Inker of Mike Turner's smash hit Fathom, one of the greatest ink styles out there, Jon Sibal...
-and-
Widely accepted to be the greatest inker in the market today, of the untouchable Uncanny X-Men and Cliffhanger's smash hit Battlechasers, the one and only Tim Townsend!!
-colors-
His holyness, colorist of the one of the highest selling books in the six months, Fathom, Peter Steigerwald!
This is not a final list, mind you, as more judges are pending. (big ones )
The contest will be run very similarly to Andy's last year- four pencilling winners to be inked, three inks to be colored, to coloring winners, and one ultimate piece that demonstrates synergy between all players because that's what really counts in the pages.
I'll be sending comic prizes to the winners and also cash prizes. All entrants are encouraged to send $5 to creators of the eventual winning overall piece, although I'm not coming after you if you don't. Not like I could do anything anyway.
Comic prizes and recognition will also be given to artists of suggested characters to be announced the day before pencilling begins, although if you want to start early (which is fine) it'll most likely be a mainstream Top Cow or Image character....
.... *cough like Witchblade*
Three weeks and three weeks alone will be given for each round. Pencilling round begins the first day of the new millenium, 01.01.01 because I like to keep typing it. Entries will be due twelve noon western time 01.22.01. Inks begin immediately and run until twelve noon on the day colorists start working, 02.12.01.
I expect, as Andy did, that all of you will be on your most courteous behavior and I'm sure we won't have any problems. Disqualification is as easy as me pressing delete, you know.
URL for the art contest will be http://artcontest.seraphseven.com]http://artcontest.seraphseven.com .
Questions may be directed to me (contact information below). Entries should be sent (when the time comes) to .
And that should clear it up! Thanks to all of you for your interest and thanks to all of our judges, PA in particular. Go visit Sismik the all of ya'. Thanks also to Darren Close, Jay of Comicfreek, Tim McBurnie (Rinaldo), Billy Dallas Patton, my tech man Cam Gillespie, and the entire Gillespie family. Love ya', Dena. I'm out of your house.
Best of luck, everybody! I'll see you Friday the 29 when I return! Can't wait to see what you all come up with!!!!!
