I am trying to put together a website for myself. I have an account at ProHosting but I can't figure out how to get the FTP thing working! Am I right in thinking that you use FTP software [I have FETCH - Mac version] to upload your site to an FTP client who will effectively do the placing of your site for you once gievn the account info? Or have I made that up :0
Please help me out here, I just havent ever done anything like this before! Thanks.

That's pretty much exactly what you do. You make your site and then upload it, along with all the necessary dirs and crap, to your ISP. They should have some sort of guide as to where exactly you're supposed to shove it in.
My old ISP also required the first page to be called index.htm or something to that effect for the page to properly load.
It's been a few years since I've messed with HTML and webpages, so I may be completely wrong.

ok first of all you don't upload you files to a client you upload your files to the server.

just type in the server type your username and password select the files you want to upload and upload them and it should do it to your directory on the server..

Freddio has it right. Just remember that your starting page (your home page, or whatever you want to call it) should be named index.html
