You'll have to do the bar shadows by hand... any automatic method would look too fake.

You might want to change the color of his collar... as it is, it seems too close to his skin color.

That pic would look so awesome with a strong light coming from about 45 above and in front of the guy, so that the bars made shadows all down his face and he'd look kind of evil and whatnot. Dude. Do that.

About making shadows... Just go in with a brush on very low opacity and slowly carve away at them so they don't look too jagged.

Nice pic. One thing though about the bars, they seem to be far too skinny, like he could just grab them and bend them to escape.

This pic looks pretty good - but I'm sure a few tweaks would really improve it.

1) Move the bars so we can see the eyese - even if they have no pupils.

2) Try to make the lighting more dramatic. Right now the lighting isn't telling us any thing about the scene. It is all just evenly lit - this is boring!

3) The back wall looks a bit shiney - did you use some kind of automated embossing to get the wall texture? If so... it shows! Try to darken it and perhaps blur it slightly, after all the wall isn't the focus of the image.

4) The stubble on his hair needs some variation in the shading. It must follow the same basic shape as the head. ie shadows and highlites where the head curves.

Hope that helps, Ampa.

Shadows would be easy.

make a separate layer under the bar layer and set it to multi

make a rectangular selection the shape of a bar and be sure to feather a couple of pixels

fill the section with black and adjust the opacity so it looks like a shadow.

Go to the layer with the head and select it

go back to the bar shadow layer and select invese then delete.

you can use the smudge tool to create effects with the edges of the shadow.

I use this method to make shadows all over the place. Just adjust opacity and feathering to get the right effect. And for god sake keep them on a separate layer.

hope it helps

I would like a critique to know if I'm headed in the right direction. I wasn't sure how to go about creating the bars, so they were rendered. The problem is, I'm not sure how to place the shadows of the bars on the character. Can someone give it shot? Still don't have a tablet so it's all mouse work.
Thanks..

if he is standing, looking out of his cell, don't you think he'd stand so that the bars aren't blocking his pupils?

You're right, didn't even notice that. I'll move the bars a bit, but he doesn't have pupils, but the bars are in the wrong spot for sure. Thanks Hennifer..

Thanks for the replys guys. I think I may take the bars away all together, or try the dramatic lighting and see if that helps. I'll post the updated version soon and maybe you all can help me from there. I'm very new to this type of art.
