I'm having trouble getting Max to run using the Open GL option. For some reason I get the splash image and as soon as Max opens I get an error message and the program shuts down. I've tried the other options but Max still doesn't run properly. I think that it may be something to do with the open gl drivers for my 3d card but I'm not entirely sure.
I'm running Windows 98, 64 Mbs and using a Vodoo 3 2000 pci card.
Can anyone help?
P.S - I know this isn't directly an art question but it is art related so no wasting my time by telling me this should go in Random Musing. |

You shouldnt need open GL to run max. When it starts up the first time, it will ask you what you wish to run it with.. if open gl isnt working. Just use software rendering.

That's because 3Dfx sucks and doesn't support OpenGL.... Just their GLide crap... |

What error are you getting exactly?
One other thing you might want to check is what color depth your desktop is running at. I can't seem to get max to work in 32 bit color. Try 16 bit, and see if it'll run. |

Run in software rendering as mentioned above (Heidi). Run "3dsmax.exe -h" to force video setup.
If you still get an error, then look elsewhere.

I had the same problem with my voodoo 3 3000 card except I am running Win2k. Try going to the 3dfx support site and downloading the lates drivers. I downloaded the latest beta drivers which tend to be further developed than the official releases, and they seem to be working fine. If that doesn't work do what Frost said and use the Heidi (Software Z Buffer) Drivers. I would much rather work with the opengl drivers though it makes everything look so much smoother. Also if your really getting into using 3DSMax you might want to try looking into getting a higher end video card which has custom 3DSMax drivers for it. |
