Hey elam, thanks for the reply. I haven't had a chance yet to take any life drawing classes yet. I have to rake up some money.

When you say find shapes, do you mean you look for the basic shapes? (cubes, cones, spheres, etc..) Like how I outlined in the right arm? or angular shapes like the left arm? I'm a little confused because I just read this book that was talking about finding shapes, and in the example it had a bunch of angular shapes..

thanks for the help

I'm doing figure study right now, and I have a couple questions. First, I remember reading how much Fred stressed that life drawing was vital. I'm not in a figure drawing class now, but I will be next semester at my school. But in the meantime, should I avoid practing with photos? Do bad habbits manifest from them?

Also, in the figures I posted below, and in about 70-90 others, I never figured where the backbone line should be. I have a hard time finding it, but if I do find it, I have a hard time drawing around it. Are there any tips on that? Should I start with the head, then backbone and then the rest?

I used my newsgroup porn extractor to get a bunch of pictures, then I used ThumbnaisPlus' slide show feature set to 2 minutes then drew the figures. Is it best to avoid sketchy lines and just use single hard lines?
Hi.

and help would be a happy fun day. Thanks.

hi nori,

I don't think there's anything wrong with using photos. Here's an old exercise I learned..

using photos, cutting them up to find volumes. Gives you a nice feel of the form. As for starting points and finding backbones, I personally always start with a head or torso and find the shapes...

Buy a good anatomy book, I have Peck's Anatomy for Artist, study it and draw skeletons. great exercises. Those drawings are pretty damn good by the way. Have you had any life drawing?

Hi Nori,

I would not use photos in the beginning, you will have to train to see and feel the movment of the subject you are drawing. copying photos will push you back in your development and you will develop bad habits.

Buy and read; Kimon Nicolaides: the Natural Way to Draw. the best book you can get on the subject. believe me this book is great.

second; you dont need money to start life drawing, the posing figure doesnt have to be nacked either. We got a bunch of people together drawing from life without any costs.

if we want later a nude model we will throw together the money and hire a person.

all the best to you
cheers
Eckhardt
