For Rinaldo, I know you like this kinda stuff.

I was watching Braveheart again and this style of helmet was behind BadDude in one shot. I embellished. In fact, since the subject of photo ref and how it is used well ( if used at all) comes up here all the time, I should try to post it. Buuut, no screencaptures from DVD on macs. At least I have a DVD now. sniff.

Well, go get the movie, if you are interested.

I loved that movie. When I get the cash I'm going to go insane buying DVDs.

I like exploring all the different styles that were around back then, people always seem to generalise/stereotype armour (me included most of the time) but it was a very personal thing. Reading a bit of fantasy stuff that was written way back it's obvious that all fighting get up was very personalised. It was an offence to steal someone elses helm. To do so would signify that you had defeated the owner, for no one would allow such a thing to happen. The same with swords and the early guns. That's one thing I liked about that Romeo + Juliet redo they did a while back. Even tho it was set in the present the guns where all guilt-laden and reminiscent of those beautiful old swords. (as for the rest of the movie......)

I like the way the metal turned out Spooge. For me its really captured the texture. Not too shiny but not too ragged/dented. I cant get enough of this sorta thing.
Now how much would it cost me to commission you do a Dragon?.......

Hi, Spooge...

Nice picture...as usual.

Heumm..! I wanted to ask you a question again ...?

About the way you draw stone, rocks, tree, forests, etc, about these specific textures you shaw with each wall you create in your photoshop paintings, specially in your matte paintings..

How do you do...
Do you have any special brush or something else..?
Except if it's a secret...:-)
Can you explain it to me.. Oh in few words.

Thank you very much..

Weeks.

Looks good spooge, but I think the hand area may need some more definition. It blends in too much with the shoulder.

By the way, if your looking for a movie that has cool armor and stuff then check out "The Messenger". The battles in that movie were done very well and everyone has their own unique armor.

Heuuh...!
Thank you very much, mr Nori.. : but I do my best to explain something quite important for me..I know my english is not very good, but you ought to try to speak French yourself, and we could compare the way you try...No...?

My question is, I suppose, simple enough...

I've seen the goodbrush's site, but even Craig show us a lot of things, (and "merci" for that) I wanted to know the way he paint mountains, forrest, tree...in his matte paintings, which are very realistic..

Does he use any special brush or something else...

I just want to know the process...

if he can take two minutes for me...

Voil...thank you all

hum...

Great stuff Spooge, nice to have you back! What happens to all the stuff you post here? Much of it doesn't end up on your site. How about a Spooge archive?

I had this reply up in a seperate browser window and forgot to post it(hence the other posting)!

Hey Spooge, try here. It has some utilities with which you can capture stills from a DVD, and for the Mac.

Also, I thought you had painted a picture of the guitarist Buckethead. You know the guy who wears a mask and a KFC bucket on his head? He plays with Primus sometimes. He's a badass.

I really like the color reflections you did on this pic. You really know your way around light reflection depending on the shape, shows you know by heart how reflections react on metal objects (from the tut on your website). The touch of purple is also very awesome, even though I don't know where it would come from (the sky? hrmm) and the teeny weeny red sparkle on the right side of the helmet gives it a special charm. At first I thought the light on the spear to be a bit innacurate, but then I noticed it's not bend at the same angle as the head, so the lighting is good, but I did some changes a bit, tell me what you think. After looking at it, I still think yours looks better.

And grr to MACs for no DVD capture Can't you screen cap the screen like on a PC with PRINTSCREEN?

Very nice painting. What sparks my interest the most about your work is that you, even though your technique is very sloppy (I mean it in a positive way) you show nearly precise control over it. It feels as though everything is in harmony, color and structure, but still going in high speed whenver I look at your pics. One get the feeling that you can see every trace of every singel brushstroke The colors are a joy to look at as usual.

I like your render of mickes sketch very much. It kind of gives me another perspective on mine. I was quite happy with it before seeing your's, now, I am not sure anymore lol. Very nice indeed, like the lighting alot, good interpretation.

I also think it is very interesting one image can create two such different interpretations.

PS. Excalibur has some very good armour

Thanks mr Buttle.

When I went through the process of what is involved in ripping, it lost much of it's appeal. The freeze frame works well enough.

Ceenda, I put a whole bunch of garbage on my site in late august. Look for forum in the left nav area.

Why thank you again, Pierre. I think the seeming contrast between the energy and looseness of the application of stokes and that they are in the right place creates visual interest. i wish I could design my shapes better, and I am working on it.

Snake Grunger, I think you brought attention to the hand, which I was trying to down play. I ran out of time and I had no clue as to what the hand would be doing, so i left it out as much as I could. You brought back a lot of the edges that are pretty far out of whack. A good general rule is if you can't figure something out, loose it in shadow. Don't tell anyone I said that, you know.

Weeks, is there some distinction between mountains and trees and walls and smaller objects or figures? I am not sure what you are asking....

There is no special brush or tricks, if I understand you. The more realistic, generally the higher resolution I will try to go. It is still loosely painted, but on a finer scale. When you down rez or look at from afar, it "tightens up."

Hey Pierre, just wanted to point out that you have different styles and goals. Craig is used to cinematography-like lighting, cheating/exaggerating images to make them stand out more, with more dramatic lighting and more contrast - it comes with his line of work, and that's what makes his stuff stand out a lot. You strike me more as a natural painter, painting things as they look in reality, with the accidental/randomly natural and non-ideal lighting, which is also a good thing in my humble oppinion. So I wouldn't be surprised to see Spooges stand out more, that's what he's good at. =)

Spooge, don't call what you draw garbage, or else other people will think what they do is lower than garbage. And yes, I approve of what you say about shadows, because I realized the hand didn't seems to really grab the spear in the angle it is in. You have to concentrate on what's important.

Thank you again for taking the time to write me a second time, it is well appreciated! (I keep count of these kind of things )

Snake...they call that stalking

BTW, Spooge I really dig the depth you get with so few details! I know myself I tend to get lost trying for detail. Sigh!
