Is this way of creating an environment or image of any interest? Seems like a good and fast way to work out the global lighting of the major shapes.

It reminds me of Mechwarrior's cities..

Just one comment, is this a rain drain ? If it is, why putting a solid wall at the end of it ?
My twisted logic.

Very interesting, I've been playing around with some similar 3d+2d concepts... But you have to be remember to be wary of trusting the light setup a 3d render gives you, since without radiosity (or a lot of work with regular lights, and that also requires quite a bit of 3d experience) it is in many ways only an incorrect approximation of real light. So 3d is inherently better for shapes than moods, which of course can be an excellent reason in itself to try and use it for the latter - "why climb the mountain? because it's there"

Pierre: Nice to see you haven't abandoned the forum. Yeah, it's nice to play around with 3d as basic shapes and stuff... Francis Tsai did so recently on a concept he did for Myst3... it's interesting and I guess it speeds up the process, since you can move the camera any old way you like without having to redraw the entire scene, giving better freedom of design for a while (although one should have an idea of design before even starting painting).

Nice work on Micke's girl face.

Sage,
I had a very different mental image in mind before I started working on it, but got tired pretty fast a left it that way, went to do some other stuff. Yes, I agree that It isn't that original at this stage, pretty much a collection of boxes

egerie,
Could be a rain drain, never intended it as one though lol. Never thought that much of the logic when I did it.

sfr,
It is true that 3D can only simulate the real world in a limited way, for now. It also depends on which rendering engine you use. If you have any knowledge of shader writing in Pixar's Photorealistic Renderman, or any other renderer such as Mental Ray (discreet logic) then you can implement your artistic skill into the mathematical equations. But of course, you will always be limited to what the engine will let you do and affect. I have never been too much of a fan of 3d when it comes to stills. You can create some very pretty work with it, but it it will most often be, as you stated, a tedious process with a lot of modeling lighting, texturing etc involved. Sometimes it is better to paint the image, especiall for 2d artist that do not intend to animate their artwork. My intention by posting this image was to emphazize that 2d artists can gain alot from taking advantage of what 3d has to offer in perspective and lighting, not take over the entire process. "if you can't beat them, join them" lol

Frost,
Agreed. Thanks for the comment on the rendering of Mickes girl sketch.
