Ok here goes.
This is the practice I did before trying it out on my old pic. I kinda got side-tracked on drawing hawks, and my feeble attempt shows how retarded I am. I like the right most hawk head though. The wings, I am impressed with. I used reference books of those "Eyewitness Books", very visual, very nice. Lots of pictures.
And here is my new re-drawn pic (well... kinda). All i did was draw a wing on the empty space I had. Stupid hand that I drew from someone's tutorial on this forum (you may recognise the line technique thinggy to draw the hand) kinda got in the way, but that didnt stop me. I think it looks OK, but not too real. I think that angel wings would go up more at first, then bend down at the end of the wing, but mehhhhh, what can i do.
So here they are, for your viewing pleasure. Comments and criticisms and re-editing of my pics welcome.
p.s - are my scannings too big for some people? I always think of this before I save it and upload to my site.

Do you have a lightbox?
I'd reccomend that you sketch your proportions first. Do the cubes/spheres/cylindars first to establish pose & form. Then worry about the details. Try doing gesture drawings. As far as the wings? Just remember what Feathers look like, and that one layer always overlaps another.

Nope, Dont have a lightbox, don't see how it would help in my situation either. I used to draw my figures using basic geometric shapes, but it didn't quite work with me. I really dont concern myself with the specifics of "the body is 7 heads tall, 3 heads wide" or any of that. Im rambling agian.... Oh yeah, about the feather not overlapping, which wing are you pointing that out on ? Because I have totally ditched the left wing, and have concentrated more on the nice looks of the right wing that I had drawn in.
*Sniff, no one saw my new post because of the down time...will people read this now , now that its at the top??*

In some ways I don't think you're following your own advice. Part of wings looking cool is their proportion to the bird's body that we can see in the references. Even if we don't stick to the physics of the situation and draw huge wings on humans, I think proportionally they still have to carry some of that long form that just screams 'grace' and 'precision' when you see it on a bird of prey. Your new one comes off looking stubby, for want of a better word.
err, anyway, I did this to hopefully convey what I'm on about.
(what's a light box anyway?) |

Jenn, I love that pose and wing position on that last sketch you have. I may have to steal it for a pic of my own.

Isn't a lightbox one of those little tablet-like thinggies where there is a bright fluorescent light inside, and a glass plate so the light comes out as muchos as possible. So it lets you trace better by putting a picture, then a blank piece of paper ontop, ontop of the light box?? Hmm, my explanation aint too good........ |

You should really work on the wings, it's the most important, like Muzman said they should have grace and a majestic (sp?) feel.
You can play a lot with the form of the wings to give him a mean or warm friendly look, did some quick garbage to show what i mean.
'Vampiric' like sharp wings give a coolio evil/menacing look while soften curves ...anyways...
...and my own unfinished $0.2
