I'm not really sure what I'm painting here. I usualy dont. Most of the time I just paint and see what comes out. It's kinda like a cliff side with a few flat places and a path and stuff. I'm not really sure what I'm drawing in the middle tho. Could be a big block of flats or the edge of a runway built in the mountains. Anyway it is very very far from finished and I would just like you to point out the bad bits before I continue

Humm...
I would recommend you to stop using the smudge tool, as much as you do. Right now I think it looks like a pile of mud. Try using only the hardbrushes at first, to get a somewhat sharp & nice look to it. Put down basic values & forms first.

I started off with a hard brush but wanted to blend the colours into each other and make the light blend better cos I couldn't make a proper shape out of it. I think I will harden the edges as I go on. While I'm talking about it, what are the best ways to get a gradual blend of light to dark? i thought the smudge on a low setting would be good but I'm not sure

I can't wait to see this finished. As far as I'm concerned I think it will turn out a beauty.

ok just notised how bad this picture looked so i totally re drew the top half and I think it looks really good now... well, when you stand 10 foot away from the screen it looks really good and that really makes me wanna add more detail and fine lines to it. I also added in my lil lighting effects in this image so that you can see what the feel will be in the finished pic

Very eery mood! I like how it's coming

I think it is looking rather 2 dimensional though. I don't know if that is what you're going for, but it would look great for a Final Fantasy path background

Here's just a suggestion, perhaps take out the upper left of the shot, and add some contrast, perhaps some distant cliffs with the path very small with a sunset or something. As for the path you have now, try shortening the height of them, so your point of view is coming more straight on instead of a flyby. It might help to put your horizon in, and make your paths with reference to it.

Can't wait to see the next version =)

Regards,
Patrick

As you can see from the first version I did try to get the sky and distant moutains in (heh i even had a layer called distant moutains) but after looking at it again i could see that the view was wrong for that to be there and thats what made it look weird. from what you say I think I need to bring the nearer cliff sides higher up and the further ones lower down and I think that will change the perspective allowing me to add sky and stuff. I do want to change the perspective now cos I want to add some buildings to it and some sorta military theme to it cos while I was drawing it I was reminded of C&C Red Alert and i think that what drew me to that blue and red lighting which you see in the Tiberian Sun. At first I was just mucking about trying my first at a landscape and i'm pretty happy with what i can do so look forward to other landscapes and the later version of this which I think will take another day Thanks alot
