Does anyone know of a good technique of making hair in 3d? I've seen plug-ins like shag:hair for 3dsmax but that's a bit too expensive even though it looks really damn real. Anyways I'm thinking about putting long hair on a barbarian type guy i'm working on but I can't seem to figure out a good way to make hair in 3d. Any suggestions? |

you could always take a sample of your own hair and attach it to your screen via scotch tape. Be sure no to rotate the view after wards, then you'll have to reposition the hair, and you know how scotch tape looses it's stickyness after a while...seriously

Without plugins, there aren't many good methods. The best one I've seen, however, is the method used on a lot of new Dreamcast and PSX games. Basically, make a few textures of hair, then layer them on the model. You can make bangs pretty easy by adding an alpha channel. In my opinion, if this is done well, it looks a LOT better than most of the hair plugins I've seen. But it's really hard to do, and is better suited for low-poly stuff. |

yea that's what i did for his eyelashes, I just put an alpha channel that had white strands of hair on a black background and made the texture solid black and I got some decent eyelashes, i may try this with his hair but i've seemed to have bad luck with that in the past...
I remember seeing someone actually use particles for hair but I cant remember where I saw that, it sounds like a neat idea but I dont actually remember how GOOD it turned out hehe... |

modeling the hair for the most part and then layering some alpha channeled strips where necessary would look nice, i'm sure. |

yea...I think that's my only option right now, I'm gonna finish texturing his body then try the hair. Maybe I should save up for Digimation's shag:hair hehe. |

Shag:Fur is one of the best plug-ins out there in terms of money:usefulness. There is a free hair plug-in by Peter Watje (who else?) called particle hair, but it is a lot more cumbersome and ugly. But hey, you can't beat the price.

i find hair plug-ins usualy to be crap, just make a texture in photoshop... make a transparancy one too and just apply it to the solid mesh.. some ways it may look better.. wont take nearly as long to render
i believe this guys stuff is just hair texured on http://optidigit.com/stevens/ |

Wow thanks for all of the responses! I'm gonna start working on this hair after I finish a water color painting for school today.
Guy: You havent seen digimations product have ya? Go to www.digimation.com they have small .avi's you can download that show off their hair plug in, it's amazing.
But I think i'm gonna have to go with the alpha channel/hair texture method on this one =). Thanks for all the help, I'll post a picture of it when I Get it looking good. |
