G'day Everyone,
When not taking time out for the Olympics down the road, I've been working on this image. I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts and comments.

That's wonderful! I like how the background is monochromatic and the fish is colored. It brings it out nicely, but yet doesn't look distraCting. Dicephiring the backgrounds a bit hard |

Wow, that's really nice. That'd look even better if you could tighten it up a bit. But it's looking AWESOME as is. |

Is that a clownfish and a sea anenomae? If I'm wrong, that still doesn't change the fact that this image is REAL perty |

Thanks to everyone who has posted a reply. Interesting to note everyone who thought of the Q-tips and yeah I know it needs 'tightening'. I'm at a bit of a loss on how exactly to do it. This illustration compared to my previous one was a lot 'tighter' but it still doesn't seem as sharp. Any suggestions on actual techniques to 'tighten' it?!
Thanks.
P.S. hmmm.... the Q tips do look more inviting to eat than the fish.

Great pic, Matt Elder The fishes colors are great and the fins look perfect. Love how they are transparent. Keep it up!

Like it very much, but it seems the whole fish is a bit out of focus, or blurry. Try getting some needlesharp edges to the details of the eyes, if not for the whole fish.

Thanks for that suggestion Sa'ge, never really thought that much about it. I knew the image felt a little flat, mainly due to the way I constructed it. I created the fish in one file, then the background in another (so I could place the fish anywhere in the image). This also helped to create the semi-transparent effect on the fins as I just masked them out a little (that is why the fin that is 'in the fish body' doesn't appear transparent. It wasn't until later on I had this great idea of using a mask)

Hey matt
For tightening it up you might want to try puting a bit more contrast between hardedges and soft ones. all of the rendering looks pretty airbrushed. And while it looks good it lacks the puch that some hard edges would give it. Hard to explain what I mean but try to avoid all the fuzzyness. it's not bad in this reguard but it looks as though you've used soft edged brushes. Use selections if you don't want to use the brush.
It's looking good as is. Keep it up |
