Great work Dhabih. Seems like you really have a lot more confidence in your paint strokes to show some of them now.

I really like the softer lighting. Glad to have you back again.

Your work has certainly matured a lot. I never cared much for the glowy, shiny stuff you did (Personal preference - glows remind me of the 80's, and that's an evil decade), but it seems you've managed to turn them into something great. It still glows, but in a more subtle, vibrant way. /me likes.

Oh, someone mentioned the Mitsubishi symbol. An interesting fact: That logo is also an old nordic symbol that signifies deity. Go figure.

Hey Dhabih,

How did you render the surface on the breastplate? Ive been trying to paint a surface that seems to have almost those EXACT same properties. Any insights?

Cool shit dhab. Seems everyone loves your newer style, although I've gotta say I really liked your older shinier "DODGE, DODGE, DODGE!" look. Lots of people saying they really prefer your new work, so I thought I'd chime in that I loved the old work just as much.

So hows that tutorial coming along?

I love that face...It's incredibly expressive...The other part that blows me away is the ivory breastplate with gold inlays...I can almost feel the cold, slick surface and hear the tap of my fingernails on it.

About the chestplate,
Ok, this is something i'm not really good at yet and that is describing why i did something or what i was thinking, my artistic vocabulary isnt that full yet. Heck, i dont really know the diff between saturation and value... but anyway, i'll try to explain somethings i kept in mind about the white plate.

I think the main thing is to keep in mind that because its white doesnt mean it will shade in grays. I took into consideration the light value of the scene and the things around it. For example near the red cloth, there is some red on the white chest plate. The specular highlight on the plate also is determining the texture of the plate....if i had a big diffuse (that the right term?) highlight that it would have made it not look as hard and shiny, but i put smaller highlights that had some falloff to it to make it kind of porcelain. If i had no falloff in the highlight it may have looked way shinier and that wasnt something i wanted to do. Now that i look at it, i'm noticing some things wrong with the actualy shape, it seems a slightly out of proportion, and the shading isn't as good as i'd like in the area about his right hand. hmmmm. thats about all i can think of. I hope this at least sort of helped

(Joachim - : forgot to answer your question in the last message, but no, this isn't for anything really, just for fun. it will be used later on possibly for a personal project i have)

later,

-dhab

I was thinking it looked more like mother of pearl than ivory. (I think m.p refracts a bit though)

Anyway, looks great. Kudos.
I'd almost forgotten just how dramatically different big D's style is. Then again that's the nature of the place these days. If there's a 'net award for 'most explosive piece of hosting' This joint would surely be in the running.

All I gotta say is that there is an incredible amount of imagination in this piece. It's not just about coming up with something new but also applying what already exists (ie textures we recognize and can interpret). I don't think I'm explaining myself very well so forgive me but its images like this that inspire and let us know there are no boundaries.

Very cool Dhab-good to see you at the drawing board again. I really like the volume in the image, he really feels like he is sitting in front of me and weighs as much as he does. THe modelling on the peices is exceptional. For some reaon this image would not load earlier. I am glad it finally did.

The design work on the cloth, and his pet is just incredible. Were you the artist and designer? Very strong..

It's about time you got back to your board...

Nice piece. I love the soft subtle value changes in the face. They really capture my eye. Your gonna love PS 5.5. Check out the "history" feature. I don't know how I got along without it.

i think i'm going to kill myself.

ya ya ya

the heft and weight of the figure is perfect.. looks like something you'd see hung in a museum in the era of Star Wars, of a past leader, a king perhaps.. if there were museums in Star Wars, if they had kings in Star Wars..

as always, lighting is awesome.. your explination on how everything works together taught me a few things, even better since i'm trying to improve my own sense of light and texture in my own art. Good to take 3D concepts like radiosity and incorporate em into 2D.

"As it turns out, hefe-weisen with lemon is delicious... athlete's foot with lemon is a little piece of World War I. Trench warfare and wholesale murder of our nation's brightest young men--distilled for eternity in a fruit. Who knew? It hurt so much more than I ever thought possible."

don's ask.

Must say I think this might be one of your best pictures! Really creepy..reminds me of the old portraits where most rich people look like...well..."moon-faced" I hope for their sake, it was just the artist style of the time, and that they did not look like otherworldy beings.

Again..well done!

Whoa, that really is excellent, as a million people have said before me already Less shine, more substance - I love it... Really convincing lighting and reflections everywhere - the breast plate, the shadow under his hand, the things around his neck (yum, they look so lovely). I agree with everyone else, this is the best image you've shown to us...

Replies:

spooge - : thanks man, means a lot coming from you (and from everyone else, but....well...you all
understand.)

CyberArtist - : Well, truth is the detailed parts, like the face and upper body where detailed on the
first night and the rest was done last night. I actually was gonna leave the rest in a more unfinished
state because i just got tired of working on it, but my dad saw it and encouraged me to finish it up
some more. I think the gloves especially are the ones i should have worked on some more.

Hurri-cane - : see above

Sumaleth - : You're right. I noticed this toward the end of drawing it, but in my mind i justified it
by thinking "Well, it looks like maybe he's leaning on his right arm more." Dumb excuse now that i see
myself write it, so i wish i changed it earlier. heh.

Frost - : it'll all make sense one day

LeChuck - : Well it's supposed to look small and a bit wierd, but not a lump of skin fused to the head,
i can see what you mean though i think. So since i dont wanna work on it anymore, i'm gonna make up an
excuse like "YA! it IS supposed to look like a lump of skin fused to his head"

Axl - : The resolution i posted it is the resolution i created it.

thanks everyone, I appreciate the comments and feedback.....the baron from Dune? Er.....I saw dune when
i was 5.....and dont remember what that baron looked like exactly, but i saw a trailer on the SciFi
channel of their new Dune miniseries and i know what you all are talking about. It does look like him a
bit. It wasn't what i was going for, but it was what it turned out to be i guess Anyway, hopefully
this is the last fat guy i draw for awhile...

later,
-dhab

Hey, cool pic. I love the colors. Like others have already said, I think you're making dramatic progress with your art.
