Well, I finally threw a cheap geocities page up so I could finally post some stuff, so I'm gonna kick it off with one of my older pieces.
This was my third attempt at Photoshop painting (the airship being my fourth and embarassingly latest - I'm not too prolific lately!!). I did this as a pre-production painting for a game called Beneath which was unfortunately canceled 80% of the way through production (Fred can tell you how long we cried in our beer over that one!!!). Alright guys, have at! Harsh criticism is welcome. |

It looks pretty cool. Is that supposed to be a kid or an adult though? He has a buff arm for a kid or he has a big head for an adult. Just my $.02 I like the pic though. |

Wacomonkey,
That's a great painting!
I would like to see some softer edges in the background, and those fins or windows look kinda bright. But that's just splitting hairs. This image kicks booty. |

Sooperrnice, Monkee!
It's weird - your shading and color palette remind me of Mark Coleman, the artist of the Bitmap Brothers (they did games like: Cadaver, Chaos Engine, Speedball, Xenon, etc. on the Amiga & Atari years ago) ...

Woah.. this is nice stuff.. I like the 'Icarus' idea.
Well made observation Loki.. it does remind me also of Mark Coleman. Perhaps also somewhat like old Amiga pixeler UNO. Or painter Tim White...Aaaanywayyyy.. as far as critizism.. I think the background could do with a more varied lighting scheme. It looks very ambient as it is now. The character adds some of that needed contrast to the image. I like that part the most. Perhaps some shafts of light coming down from above loosing intensity as they decent. Have the background fall off towards darker values towards the vertical edges might accentuate the cylindrical feel of this cave. If that's what you intended it to be that is ofcos.
Aaah.. I hate giving critizism so excuses if I'm out of line here.. This image is definately worthy of a Windows backdrop!

Chapel: yeah, supposed to be an adult, but you're right, he's got pretty big hair!
Alias: Got lazy on the edges, I haven't even roughed up the original lasso selection for the cliffsides!
Not familiar with Mark Coleman... does he have any stuff on the web?
Silico: glad your fingers are crossed ..uh.. what for?
Delerious: Thanks Mick...I'll see if I can add a few. Nice to see you on the boards. Now fix that damn texture! |

Super-sci-fi-tastic.
Does anyone remember those games by the Bitmap Brothers (Magic Pockets etc.) - they had levels kinda like this. |

Looks cool! I remember this one.
only two things come to my mind,
one, you should play with atmospheric perspective vertically as well as z-depth (I used a techy term). Below is farther from us than straight ahead.
Two, the shapes in the rendering of your rocks does not change scale as you go further back.
Think more sculptural, like Lokis rocks, as opposed to flat shape with a few highlights.
The airship in bryce canyon, yeah that way!
Ohh, I still nedd to post that one |

Not wishing to sound picky, but it was Dan Malone that developed the Bitmap Brothers graphic style . The later guys just copied the approach he had layed down for their early games. (can still hear the Xenon theme in my head..)
This is a really nice image too. It all feels a little "rounded" for my tastes but the overall effect of the image is very pleasing. I especially like the character.

Daz: It's featured in the Photoshop 5.5 WOW Book, with a description of my technique. Jack Davis, incidentally, is one of the co-founders of Presto Studios (so a little nepotism at work there - you didn't think the painting got in on its own merits, did you??!!!) |
