Well - clearly inspired by 'Jabba's Palace' from 'Return of the Jedi'. I'm not really happy with it - those same goddamn sunset colors again - I've got to see a therapist.
Took me a couple of hours to do, while I was rendering at work.
No reference was used (obviously - otherwise it'd look a lot better )

Oh - minor webpage update - please check it out! http://www.vigilante.net/~loki

So enjoy and let me know

I'm off to SIGGRAPH tomorrow - anyone wanting to meet up?????????

Love - Loki

Thank you so much guys & gals. That'll be the last sunset image - I (kinda) promise.

Cos: more or less lunch break image - if felt like painting another 'castle on rockledge in the sunset' image. I painted it while working in 3D, doing some testrenders. There's always a lot of waiting involved - changing render value, render, wait, look at image, scratch head, change value again, render, wait again, etc.

Binke: 1200x800 or something like that - check my page, there's more info on that image. Glad you like it. How's your stuff going?

Isric: Thank you. I've only got a little bit of traditional education. I never went to art-college. I pretty much tought myself - 90% digital though.

And that lack of traditional education kicks my ass right now. I wish I could've gone to something like the 'Art Center' - but there's nothing like that in Austria and now there's no time anymore (and it's expensive!!!).
But I've started painting in water colors on the weekends. And I love it - great training and helps a lot.

Kyri: muchos!

Loki,
You're one of the first people to offer me advice on painting and one of the first people here I admired.

I really like your work. This image is great.

i love the image

you said you didnt like the sunset? you should add some rolling clouds or something, and put the sun's reflection cast on them, it would really improve it

i love the fading mountains in the background too

Ok, you've gotten too many compliments. Time for a critique. ;)

Actually, it's just a tiny one... The area right around the citadel looks a bit washed out. It might look better if you made the shadows to the left a little cooler (either darker, or a more saturated blue.) Obviously it's going to be closer to grey due to the distance and the dust, but... I just love the crispness and the contrast of the rest of the picture, I'd really like to see that carry over into the key feature of the image.

I wouldn't do that - I think you'd quickly see the pic become flat, as the citadel began to approximate the contrast level of the foreground. This would in turn necessitate doing something even more radical to bring the foreground back to where it belongs, and it's an endless circle...

good stuff Loki,

Don't know if you have left yet for Siggraph, but I was just in New Orleans about a week ago on business, and let me tell you. It was hot as a son of a bitch. 110 degress in the shade, so for anybody going to Siggraph, dress warm, and don't have too much fun.

later

Hmm, I'm a little late but, nice work. =)

I like the apparent blending of ambiant over far ranges, diminishing contrast from the foreground. Nice stuff.

That is a fantastic pic Loki!

It could be the desert palace of Arrakeen in the book DUNE.

Did you do this entirely from memory or did you use any reference material?

The rocks remind me of pictures I've seen of the giant's causeway in Ireland.

I'm back ... SIGGRAPH was hot and stressful - but New Orleans is always great.

ceenda: this is done entirely from memory. I should've looked at somke reference before I started it though ...

I think 99% of the suggestions you guys had are totally valid - I'll keeop 'em in mind for the next painting I'll do!

Til then - thanks, glad that you liked it,

Loki
