Does anyone know how to make a page open without navigation or anything just the window and title bar and that is IT! I would love to learn this commonly used technique so that my images would load quickly into small little windows, as opposed to shifting the browser window to a whole new page that displays all this useless white. Flash sites often use this, they will have nothing but a window with their animation running within it. Mr. giveintosin uses this technique with his links on his main page. http://www.giveintosin.com/main.htm#
anyone one know the secret formula? he he he.

Why did he leave? I can't remember, but I'm sure if you search for the last post he did, you'll find out why.

Insert this in the head:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JAVASCRIPT
TYPE="TEXT/JAVASCRIPT">
function newWindow() {
window.open('URL here' , 'name', 'width=x, height=y)
}
</SCRIPT>
And then call the function when you need it, ex:
<A HREF = "javascript:newWindow()">
Link Name</A>
Hope this helps

Technically it's not called a "boardless" window, but rather a "chromeless" window. Here is a pretty good tutorial on it.
http://www.siteexperts.com/tips/techniques/ts05/page1.asp
I absolutly LOVE the way those windows look when they work right. The way Microbians.com looks just blows me away everytime I go back there...
Also recall that on the Microbians site there is a zip file that you can download with demonstrations & such... One sec let me find it.
Yup down at the bottom of the Chromeless window pop-up there is a little bit that says "chromeless windows V.10" click it opens new window with all the goodies...
Hope that helped a bit. |

The Chromeless windows seems like too much to take on right now. Elam, could you just explain a little better how to get the simple new windows to work? I tried it and could get it to work.
This is what I had.
<html>
<head>
<title>Untitled Document</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JAVASCRIPT
TYPE="TEXT/JAVASCRIPT">
function newWindow() {
window.open('new.html' , 'new', 'width=200, height=200)
}
</SCRIPT>
</head>
<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<A HREF = "javascript:newWindow()">
new</A>
</body>
</html>
and it didn't work. can you tell me again how to do it with more detail?? Thanks man.

hey ian you can do it in dreamweaver easily.
just select your link. the add a popup window behavior. then change the settings to what ever you like. and then change the behavior to a 'onclick' ... hmm dont have DW open here so i think this is right but i'm not sure... ask if you need more detail

Hi guys!
I figured out how to do it in Dreamweaver! However there is still one problem. Dreamweaver seems to be setting the margins to be slightly more than zero. So I get the page and it all fits nicely with the exception of space on the left and top of the picture. Ugly. Dreamweaver tends to be mean when it comes to margins. Anyone know if there is a setting somewhere telling it to put margins of every page iv'e got?
thanks,
ian

p.s.
im linking directly to the image, would that affect anything. (If this is so, does that mean I have to make an individual page for each and every one of my art pieces?)
thanks for the help.

Hey Ian,
If you look at your script, you left out a ' after height=200. The height and the width must be enclosed, like this
window.open('new.html' , 'new', 'width=200, height=200')
I copied and pasted, and it worked fine. Syntax is a bitch.
Also, if your interested in learning a little more about Javascript, I would recommend Javascript For The World Wide Web Visual Quickstart Guide by Tom Negrino and Dori Smith. ISBN 0-201-35463-2.
It's only about $18.00 and has a companion web site to download scripts and stuff. Very helpful.
