hey,
when you draw a character, do you usually start with the head to toe or toe to head?
sometimes, I was trying to draw a female face, and it ends up look like a male face, hummmm. what's the major difference between a female's face and a male's face? eye position? eye brow length and position? mouth size and position? .............
thanx
plesae don't cuss at me because I asked this newbie question, as least i am not trying to hide it that I suck, but I really want to improve.

thank you again.....
again...
again.....

What I use to make that difference is the Shape of the face, the hairdo, different mouth, you know, not painted for men, and the neck, the neck is VERY important (I draw comics) aye lashes, and thin eyebrow, thats about all the diference I make, which is... almost everything... AW almost forgot, no mustache for women unles she belongs to a circus or something.... OK hope you get something out of this reply, (remember the neck)

Don't forget that men usually have a more squared jaw, whereas womens' are smoother. Also, men's chins are usually more pronounced/defined. The nose on a man usually is more rugged/detailed, whereas a chicks' nose is lighter, smoother, less detailed. Most of this goes applies to a comic/cartoony style rather than real life painting, though.

Arched, thin eyebrows for the ladies, heavier eyebrows for dudes.

And yes, a nice, sexy thin neck for girlies, and thicker, more muscular necks for the hombres.

If all else fails, you can use a big arrow with the words "MAN" or "WOMAN" next to it

Just kidding. Good luck!

The main difference between male and female faces is that female faces are more smooth than male faces . If you take a look at the human skull the difference would be very hard to notice . One solution to the problem would be to focus on some characteristics . For women those are eyelashes , somewhat triangular smooth shape of the face , bigger lips than the male counterparts and a delicate nose . You may test yourself by drawing heads without hair and then ask yourself if the face looks more female or male .
Anyway you should consider somehow that the above statements are suitable for stylised faces only , because there are also female faces that look quite male in the today world . For my part I like drawing beautiful faces much more then ugly ones .

Hope that helps a bit

Keep in mind that females have bigger eyes than males. Don't believe me just look around. As far as what do I draw first... I draw the pose then I block it in. If I want it to be a female I add two extra blocks.. you know where. I usually start on the torso and work my way out. Depending on how detailed I want the pic is when I do the face. If I want it extremely detailed I work on the face as soon as I rough sketch the body to make sure it all fits. If I want the pic to be just a rough then I save the face for last.

i usually start with shoulders.. i love shoulders

the framework of the body is built from there. guys have broader shoulders, thicker necks, girls are based more on skeleton and curves, guys are based more on muscle, mass and squareness. i tend to draw girls' eyes lower down on the head, eyes bigger and angled upward. guys' eyes are 'no big deal'.. in other words, more generic in general eyes that are spaced farther apart in females = more beautiful, arch of eyebrows should align to halfway between the outer edge of the iris to the outer corner of the eye, and of course thinner in girls.

look at comics.. they exaggerate facial features and make male/females prominently different :P

everyone else has given good advice, so allow me to add some:

female faces usually don't have facial hair, so if you're drawing a moustache, it better be a guy.

Her head is too big. Keep in mind that boys start out with a big head and they kinda grow into them. Girls pretty much stay in proper proportion growing up. It looks like you are trying to draw a young girl. There is alot of other things you could probably clean up. You might want to start flipping through some magazines and analyse the pics.
