Hey everyone. Here are some quick spaceship concepts i did a while back. Pretty quick sketches....so not that tight....=)

Vortx- these are great as usual. You an art center grad? Learn on your own? I really like the look. CLEAN...the way I like to see art done. Just my personal taste. Doesn't need to be too accurate, or to perfect, just clean and readable. YOu have inspired me. I am deliberately taking a few hours this weekend and getiing some of my own designs on paper and out of my head...thanks for the inspiration...

Yea I'm at Westwood currrently as the concept artist for Red Alert II. I work directly with those guys every day. I'll tell them hi for ya. Ashton just had a supercharger added to his new Mustang Cobra so now it has 500 horsepower! Keegan is broke as usual :

Sorry everyone else for the late replies. Been at my gf's all weekend. Anyways, to answer some of the questions i saw.
Yeah, these sketches were done w/ ink and gray markers. I lay most of the perspective down w/ markers...and just ink right on top. Pretty quick process when you get it down =) And yeah, i'm from art center.....you can usually tell by the style and drawing media used....just look at TJ's stuff! Man, i gotta draw some more. Hey TJ, lets definitelly get together for dinner or something. You still live at the same place?
And thanx everyone for the compliments...i'll upload more stuff when i get the chance. For now....tho it's 1am...i'm gonna sketch....freakin' TJ, i always get so inspired when i see cool art...no sleep for me tonight..hehe..

Well go figure, I was pointed to this forum by a friend because of TJ's pictures. I think mainly because I make renderings of them on a regular basis! I do fan art in the Westwood community and I thought I'd just say great job and keep up the amazing work

As you can probably tell, Vortx(Feng) and I both went to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. As far as I'm concerned, because of its its curriculum, location and instructors, Art Center is THE place to go if you want to get into entertainment design. I'm not saying other schools aren't good, its just that Art Center has a history of producing artists that go into the entertainment field (Syd Mead, Drew Struzan the poster GOD,Ralph McQuarrie,Craig Mullens and many many more). They have an excellent Industrial Design Department as well as a great Illustration major. They also have a buttload of SGIs and PCs with Alias and Softimage classes galore. Industrial Design people can major in Car Design, Product Design, or Environmental design. I majored in product with a minor in entertainment.

I used photoshop for all the color renderings. I start with a pencil sketch, scan it in, then start painting. From time to time I will use Painter, especially for its smudge tools which I think are much better than Photoshop's. Sometimes I'll block in an area with a solid color, then layer over it with a texture from a photograph and set the composite method to Multiply or Overlay. After tweaking the contrast, color, and opacity of the textured layer to provide some variety and interest to the base layer, I'll merge the two and begin to burn and dodge the area to create three dimensional form. I'll then go in later and color dodge light sources if needed. This works really well on things like rusted metal and rock. It goes pretty fast when I'm focused, and it took me only about 15 hours start to finish of the green robot. I used that method on the concept drawing of the Tesla Trooper below.

I'm fluent in Alias and 3D max so sometimes I'll rough in a complex drawing in 3d to save time on shadows and perspective, then I'll paint over that. Its all about time vs output in the comercial world. What matters is how fast and good the finished product looks and the more shortcuts you can take the better. Once you know how to draw perspective and plot shadows the old fashioned way, I highly recommend using the computer to speed up the process.

I'm glad you enjoy modeling the designs I made - It was fun to come up with stuff that looked real world and not too far out and wacky. Red Alert was always about retro realism with a spin. By the way, that tank at the bottom is actually the APOCALYPSE TANK (formerly the mammoth tank). You can tell it by its twin barrels and double rocket launcher.

TJ- I was kinda wonder'n what size sheet did you have in photoshop when making that trooper up there? Must have been huge to have that much detail in there... Peace.
