You should work more on your line drawings before you start painting. The anatomy of the lips eyes and other parts of the face are in need of a lot of work.

Just for practice you might want to just draw faces like several drawings a day. You can post your drawings until you get good enough to start painting them.

I also don't like the floating face on the top. You should have the head attached to something or it will always look strange.

Keep working hard though. Get some books at the library on portrait painting.
    bye

Here's the photo I used as a reference for the first one:

I didn't do a line drawing on either of them. Not everyone creates the same way. I picked up the paintbrush tool, painted, then dodged/burned.

    The second one isn't a her, it's a he.

with that first picture you've got one of those funny situations where reality (ie. a photograph) doesn't look right in a painting. i don't know any real solution, unless you're willing to tinker with her face in order to make it look more 'realistic'..

Hi Gliebster, these are good pics, though I don't have much reaction to the first one. Depending on whether your goal is to 'practice' or to make a finished piece, I think choosing a photo can make a big difference in the outcome. If the photo lacks life/expression/character/good lighting/etc. then the image you create will probably reflect those same errors - so take care when copying something. Here are my comments and personal opinions...

    1st image...
    - I'd like to see more than the head
    - her nose seems wider and more defined to me in the photo
    - her glasses connecting to (and her) right ear aren't visible in your depiction of the photo, helping make her face look wider to me
    - I can see her teeth in the photo but not in the painting
    - summary: it depends on how closely you want this to match the photo - and how realistic you want the image. What are your thoughts? If your goal is to match the photo, I think it starts with the overall shape matching, blocking out areas of highlight/shadow and then it's all the little details.

    2nd image...
    - This one I had a reaction to - interesting idea
    - The only two comments I would have would be about the shape of the lips (no 'v' part of the lips) and there not seeming to be a chin
    - Cool colors
    - Seems like he's trapped in some tunnel

How much time did you spend on each of these? (that can make the difference between a nice image and a great one)

Thank you for the tips. I really appreciate it.

I didn't spend much time on either of them. They were both done for practice.
