Ok...I made two different versions of this fairly cheesy image. No points for orgianlity, but I sold it(along with "The huntress" for Conan(norwegian edition) for them to use as as poster. Now the edtior does not know which version to use. The one with the babe pulling her "thong"(not inspired by a certain new hit song) or the new one..showing all the goods while leaning on to a shield.
So I told the editor.. that I`ll poll it here.

So which version one do you guys like most?

If you want to see bigger versions..go to my site http://home.telia.no/vebsart

both stances look 'posed' if ya know what i mean, cause its not likely youd see a girl in this stance normally the one *i* like better though is the one on the left, dunno.. just seems to fit in better and it seems sexier to me, the one with the shield sort of distracts you, really cool shield though i like the scrollwork.

well, hmm. i like the left cuz the one arm seems more like its doing what you meant at first, but it might not be portraying the message quite as well as the right if you're aiming for a war mood.

in short,

the right says: hey i'm getting ready for war
the lefts says: hey i'm getting ready for sex

that's how my brain interprets it.

Dude, your not Frank Frazetta. Why dont you come up with your own style? All your pictures look the same, why dont you be original and make up your own style instead of using one that you didnt even create?

Like Synj said, your a Xerox machine. Are you capable of an original thought or an original style of painting?

Don't fret Veb. Your style is unique and yours in its own right. I believe from what I've seen on your website that you have made quite a bit of cash for your cover art. Sure it has elements that resemble Frank and Boris but your style is looser which I like. Just look at how many Renaissance or Impressionistic artists there were and are, they have similar aspects to each of theirs. I say if you can do the art, do it well and get paid for it all the better.

Oh yeah, I like the one with the shield.

Word up, Faust. The irony almost punches you in the face.

Vebjorn, I like both of them, but the shield one seems a bit more natural to me. And besides, she 's completely naked in that one.

Who are you to tell anyone to change their artistic style Ash?

Veb is comfortable with his style and does it very well (and gets paid to also =)

You may know this but, if you include hair (pubes) on any nude figure it is no longer concidered a nude, it's seen as being naked. Ok folks, a little art history lesson there..sorry hehehe.
Any way, the one of the left leaves more to the imagination. It holds my attention more, because everything isn't revealed to the viewer.
Hey Veb, if you're making money off of this, then great for you. if your style relfects another artist's style, so what. It puts money in your pocket.
A favorite quote of mine by Willian Faulkner...
An artist is a creature driven by demons. He dont know why they choose him and hes usually too busy to wonder why. He is completely amoral in that he will rob, borrow, beg, or steal from anybody and everybody to get the work done.

Im digin the shield piece better than the one on the left.

her left arm looks too "tight" to be taking off any g-string. And I would think she would be kinda bent over a little too...but who knows. She jsut looks uncomfortable on the left.

I say the sheild one. The thong one seems a bit contradictory to her raised sword...but then again that seems more realistic...Whoa! These two pictures just took on a whole new metaphorical meaning.
Hmm...I still say the shield one. The sword held high, the sheild, the angry familiar, they all work together to say something about the girl...like I better stop following her around and she means it this time.
In the other one the Lizard gives the impression of a pimp saying 'Yo, check out my honey' while she strikes a pose saying 'Hey baby, I got wha chu need right...heeere.' Well, it doesn't quite give off that kinda vibe but you know what I'm saying.

They are both great. I don't know if you have time constraints on this but what about adding a thong on the one with the shield. Maybe having it hang loosely in a sexy way and then you got the best of both worlds? If not, my vote is with the sheild.

I dunno, i think we're discussing the wrong thing here...i mean, what we should be talking about it her boobs! Theresa had the right idea...but still, her revision wasn't quite good enough, so i did a bit of editing myself...

In seriousness, I like the left one better (Vebs one i mean) and Ash u prick, shut the hell up!

Thanks guys. As for my counting..sofar about 50/50. As for the boob job. It was on the fix list from the editor. Thanks Theresa..you saved my some time;-) I`m also considering brushing up the background abit.

As for style..hmm.I actually agree a bit with Ash. I`m not the most original person out there. But to be honest..I don`t think some of my latest like" The Huntress" look either very Frazetta or Boris..It looks like a Vebjorn..lol.Or a bit classical with a
chunck of cheese. Atleast thats what I`ve been told be other credible members of this forum earlier.

As for making original pictures when it comes to make art for Conan..forget it..they want sterotype images and strong compositon. You must make out image atleast 20-30feet away. They must keep to the comics style. They never accept many of my more "original" sketches anyway.

Most Important. I look at myself as an illustrator. I don`t try too hard to change the world or be an original like Frazetta. That either happens or it does not. Not something you one day decide to do. I make money making art for games and make Conan covers and similar fantasy stuff as a hobby.I just like to make cheesy fantasy stuff. I enjoy it..plain and simple. Making naked chicks with big swords is fun.

But I have lots of art produced that looks very Boris-like up until now..I admit that why because it SOLD very well. (Note: the fact that I got Boris himself to look at my artwork and give me alot of pointers probably influenced me alot too. He told me to try using models and make my art more "realistic" and it would sell much better. He was right. He`s just made something like over 3000 bookcovers, so even if we "artists" don`t really like all of it..we must admit someone out there does.

Making your own style is not something everybody can just sit down and do. Mine is slowly coming naturally now..while some were born with a style they hardly can change :Joachim and Micke are examples of this: both had pretty strong original styles when I first met them, when they where like 16-18years old. They just had to developed it further. That kicks ass, make things 1o times easier and I still envy them that. I was 22 when I met them..and was still messing around. I constantly shifted styles, trying to find my own way..one year Boris..next Frazetta then Bisley was the main source of inspiration. I`ve emulated most top guys one time..and it has given some OK alround gfx artist skillz. But that won`t put me along with the best....nor among the most interresting. But thats how I got to do ..like 45 covers for conan in a few years..I changed my style abit every few years..lol..(actually the pulbisher thinks I might have the world record in conancovers..we`re not really sure how many Joe Jusko made.), BUT if I had not been under their restraints, I might have developed my very own style much quicker and easier. Offcourse my art will look similar from making 90% covers for the same magazine. I wonder have many more I can make;-)

Kudos to Vebjorn for his way "mature" response to Ash's... umm.. damn i don't even know what to call that. It was actually funny. That was slick, Veb.

I definitely agree with your views. Starving artists go for creativity and originality. Rich artists must please the snivelling masses. Of course, they're both artists because they both have skill and talent.

Thx for complimenting me vebjorn !
barbeque tomorrow right ...

Ash,
I don't know really what to say to you, but what you said was both very childish and wrong. It's nice with some intrigues from time to time, but don't go to far with those accusations. To call vebjorn a copy machine is totally wrong. And, it's not frazetta and boris copy, it's inspired by that style...which is called FANTASY. I'm personally not that enthusiastic about fantasy motifs myself, but that doesn't mean that this style is any less challenging than any other..and I respect vebjorn for his skills anyhow.
It's still the same things you have to learn, anatomy, composition, color, etc....and also, it's commersial art, which means you make what sells. Vebjorn do this for the money, and also because this is his interest in art...so, don't attack a whole genre, just because it's fun to call people copy machines. Everything vebjorn makes is from his head, which is a totally different ballpark than what fallen usually do (I just named him, because he's been a rather hot subject lately).....

theresa,
I agree with you, and it looked better.. -do that vebjorn! and.. -I'm sure you know a lot more about this than us guys

I'm sure it's just my imagination...but....er...does it seem sorta like she has a bit of "manliness" on her right leg? um... sorry, I don't mean to offend, I think your style is beautiful I'm sure it's just from the slightly out of focus picture. No offense I hope!

Cool..Lisa. It actually worked better than I though. Now I have a another alternative:-)

Anyways..they had a round at this among the different editors and AD`s at the publisher..and most of them seem to go with the thong pull since it seems more "right" and shows less. You guys would like to see the hires version:-b

I also like her left leg and don`t like covering it with a shield..but then again that looked kinda nice...so I must think.

Hey Veb. Very nice work as usual... (especially since it probably took you one evening to do it all in or something.=))) Wish I was as good as you are!

I personally prefer the left one for 'hormonal' reasons, =), but the right one might be best suited for the editor and public, although not as original. Why not let the editor decide?

Cheers Veb,
good color and value work -- then again, you know that already. =)

Veb:

I also like Lisa's version. It doesn't scream sex, it just shouts it. Yes, losing sight of that fine, muscular leg is a sacrifice, but I think it's a little more marketable without her "goodies" hangin out (Canadians are still a little sexually repressed, so forgive my comments if they caution you to be prudish). BTW, beautiful work as always.
