well, i gotta say im super upset about Id canning Steed. I know it was prolly justified but it's a real shame. Kenneth and Steed made such an AWESOME team Was it that hard to work with him? Quake 3 DID get finished. of course we cant debate that cuz we arent involved, but honestly, it seems before every new Id title someone gets fuckin canned. B4 Q2 Started we see Romero get the Boot, then Tokay shortly b4 Q@'s release, and now Steed? Is this just a paturn that they are staying true too? I hear Steed's temper is explosive...@ E3 he almost started a fight with some Valve guys cuz someone said they didnt like Q3A...unacceptable, i must agree.
So what do u guys think? Do u think Id should have destroyed the best character team in the industry (Ken+Steed) I mean, Id DID finish Q3, he obviousely got the work done. Does it sound to you guys like Id always seems to fire someone b4 something big? over D00m aswell :P i mean, heh, someone of our fav boyz over at Id aren't 'thinking outside of the box"
anyways...i think ive done enuff yelling for now....gunna miss ya Steed, Good Luck br0...

The best character team in the industry? Hmmm, most well known I suppose yes. It's not everyone who gets a chance to model cool original characters for a game that's become a holy relic of the genre. Id is a VERY small company (employee wise) -- therefore there is less bureaucracy to deal with, less people over your head passing down generations of limitations and such. I sure wish I had Paul's job.. =)
Granted, Paul was great, and I've attended both his latest talks at GDC, and I'll be looking forward to seeing more stuff from him... as I'll most definitely be waiting for DOOM3!
I wouldn't worry about Paul... he'll get a new job in a sec. |

The whole id and ION Storm thing makes for the game industries greatest soap opera. I still don't get why what's-his-face (I went blank on the name) was so dead set against making a new Doom that would force an ultimatum like it did. Ah well, probably for the best. Change can be a good thing...Another Doom would be awesome, but I'd like to see id make something completely new after this next Doom. |

Someone said that Carmack might not have the confidence in the team to make a new game that would actually be inventive, original, and fun. I tend to agree with that.
Ever since Doom2 their games have that half assed nonfinished fell about them.

Paul Steed taught me so much in low polygon modeling. His stuff is excellent in loonygames. I didn't like many things in q3 but I sure like pauls models... IMO they are better than textures/maps in that game. I'm sure that Paul will find new job soon, I think he would be good add in Turbine games (Asheron's Call and World Crafter 2).
Oh yeah, I only bought q3 cos of mods like q3fortress.

It seems to me that in such a small work group as id Software that this sort of conflict will -eventually- happen. People here have been talking about it, as well as Romero/Tokay leaving, as some sort of "soup opera" but it's really just the way it works, it's nothing to sprout cliches over.
Games companies are 90% creative people and there will always come a time when part of the team wants to go in a different creative direction than the other part. Thats why there is such a high exchange rate of talent in the industry (alongside the wish to constantly get more money .
