I've been trying to develop a more painterly style with my digital art. This is strange for me since my experience with digital art has mostly been 8bit. As an excercise I decided to make a 1950's style pinup illustration. I aimed for a vibrant and playful look, as was common from that era. So all you figure/painter people out there, how did I do? Ok? Bad? I think I have some difficulties with this, so please critique

very good actully.. I coudl tell it had that old sence to it the second i looked at it and before i read the text...
To me the shape of the body is fine, and is all correct, however I personally feel that the heels are too large, if you study females feet, (im sad as I did) the you will notice that there heels are a lot smaller than that.
But I liek it a lot,and the style too..
Im going through that painty style too atm.. check my prev post if ya havent already. and let me knwo what your comemtns are...

although I don't count myself to the "figure/painter people", at least not to the talented ones on this forum, I will try some critique:
1) There is an obvious line there.. You could either delete it when you want the painterly style or smudge/ airbrush it maybe.
2) there is a "hole" under her right collarbone. There should be a shoulder muscle normally I think.
3) These parts on the side of her head (temples) are going "back". The would look better if you would shade it more i think.
4) The armpit would have to be visible in that pose I think.
5) The feet look a bit unproportional. I guess you should spend some more time on them.
Otherwise its pretty great work!
I like her right arm especially, and the pose of it.
Maybe you would like to check out :

hi Alan.. u did a good job there.. at first i didn't notice anything wrong with the pic until nex point it out.. However.. what i'm interested to know is how u put in the texture of her cloth.. i need to learn some shortcuts to put in the texture.. especially for a more complex and detail texture.. it would be so tedious to draw it by hand.. Anybody got some good tips on textures?

Thanks for the feedback so far, I need to study anatomy more, and light/shade...
Freddy, I look forward to what you have to say.
Ilmi: About the texture on the cloth, I just painted it by hand

Alan. Hello. Sorry this took so long to get to I have been swamped. I did this this morning in about 10 minutes so forgive its crudeness.
There were some anatomical problems that I worked out, I have the tracing with the other image under it so you can see the difference.
The only thing I can comment on right now, as I have to get working is on the head. Too many lines in the face with tone. She is attractive, but all the laugh lines down the face and all make her look in her 40's . Not the age your trying to depict here I would imagine. And the hair, she has a short hair cut, but you have her hair flying in the wind like she has long hair. I would, if you want it to flow like wind is blowing it, find an attractive shape with it and make it longer so it has that believeability of blowing in the wind.
If there are any other personal comments you would like about what I changed, you can email me at [email protected]. I would be happy to answer any questions. Good luck...
I just realized in the tracing that I repeated a mistake you made too. The rib cage is very small, too small in fact for the rest of the body.
Taping the man show can be cool, but they are jumping in ideal pose form. Pin up girls, aside from regulaer painting have to be ideally posed. Just watching someone jump will get the motion of the action started. But then you as the artist have to think like a movie director, and a photographer. What is the action, then how can I pose this action to frame it right, and translate the correct emotional content...Here also is a quick pinup I did for crimson skies. I am not that thrilled with it, but I had to do five pin ups in a very short period of time. Oh well, deadlines...

i am not a painter, but i do draw the figure a lot in graphite, charchoal, chalk whatever.
in drawing the figure i learn a lot from anatomy books and looking at other artists. If you have a chance, look at some of the figure studies michelangelo did. You will learn just by observing other artists. I try to stay away from the "How to" books with drawing...they tend to be somewhat (ahh whats the word)...sucky.
Start by learning the bones of the body...just a breif structure. I mention this because of your chick's head is a little off above the nose. Study the muscles of the face and learn where the mouth muscles are, and all other muscles. Learning anatomy will really help, and if you can take a drawing classes at a local university would be a great help too.
Try loosening up to when you draw the figure. Especially the female figure is very curvy and smooth. Your piece seems real tight and constrained. play a little more with foreshortening and the head. have some fun with her (hehe). Maybe your could tilt her forhead back a bit...hmm.
keep working....it looks great, but you just need to loosen up a bit.
I JUST HAD AN IDEA! watch the man show on comedy central....and tape the end. pause it when they do the "girls on trampolines" section and study how the bodies of the women are shaped, poised and the lighting and that. that could help a bit
feel free to email me if you want... [email protected]
