How about promoting a higher general expertise?

Seeing as how this forum hosts many of the foremost expert professionals and amateurs alike, and an immense amount of hopeful artists who wish to reach their level, it would be a great if the accomplished artists would help the hopeful.

How?

Simple.

Many learn by doing and especially observation. It would be greatly appreciated, not only by myself, but I'm sure by many others as well, if the accomplished artists would be so kind as to save often and make public these inbetween stages of their works.

I am aware that tutorials exist already, and they are certainly sorely appreciated.

However, a raw image feed would be great. It would also require less work of those posting. Just share whatever inbetween stages and let others learn by observation. No text explanations required.

If nothing else, this should help people learn how to properly build up and detail a picture in photoshop or affiliated programs.
Buildup and detail are the keywords.

How the digital tools are applied to achieve the 'look'.

Lighting and actual knowledge of form, the ability to draw, is another matter totally, which belongs to an art class or self study.

I myself am in awe of the painterly approach many showed in the 3dpalette contest. I would love to see the stages those pictures go through. (or contrary to my no-effort request before, an actual explanation - yet again, images speak louder than words)

I hope to receive favorable and appropriate feedback

Sincerely,

DG

Yeah thats the only problem I see.. a upcoming artist who will simply steel others ideas modify and claim it as there own... that sort of thing..

"The badness of the others takes away the goodness of the good"

I would post my art!. just everyone in this forum things my art stinks I think....

There are a thousand ways of ripping off art.

If anyone does it, lets have faith the guilty will be found out, tried and convicted.

But - please - should that fear be a real hindrance?

I hope there exists enough camaraderie here, and that the accomplished artists are large enough, that we can all work together to improve our skills.

It's a sad day if people can't come together to help each other out.

I haven't seen anyone rip off Joachim's excellent Captain America, either, even though the tutorial consists of stages.

Same thing applies to Craig Mullin's Bandai Mech picture.

OR :

Instead of posting entire pictures, the focus could be on single things like a face, a hand, a gun, or whatever.

While maintaining the emphasis on a painterly approach.

Showing the progress from scratch to finished piece.

It would be hard to rip off for any commercial purposes, and still a great learning tool.

I'm working on a small website that will feature steps of my latest images. I don't think anyone can claim these images with JPG steps, since I have the original PSD files. I'm not worried, and the point is to share and hopefully help some people. I have no negative feelings about doing this.

Great, many thanks to you for sharing Frost! I remember how Imphobia (a legendary, now defunct PC demoscene diskmag) used to feature stages from graphicians like Zebig, Sigfrid, PL and how immensely useful they were to me in trying to learn some pixelling technique.
(I could share some steps too, but I'm not sure if they'd be useful to anyone since my images are quite simple after all.)

Great! We're very lucky to have Frost do this.

I hope more will follow his good example.

After much searching I came across this forum today, a great find. I'm hoping to find some helpful people here and return the favor if I can. I hope nobody minds a newbie's 2 cents here:

I think Digital Genesis' idea of just concentrating on a specific technique or concept would be a good approach.

For example: I have been looking at different artist's web sites to try and figure out a technique for rendering (2D) metal in various ways, including a good way to give the appearance of wear and tear (dents, dings, scratches, scrapes etc.). I have found many a tutorial covering the basics from start to finish of a particular picture, but not something like, "And here is how to give armor that rusted look".
Tutorials in this manner would not require a finished piece of artwork to demonstrate, it could just be a metal sphere rendered in different ways with different techniques or something.

My problem right now is I want to stop looking at the artwork that is better then mine and saying, "Man, I wish I could do that." So I'm putting forth the effort to research and test different ideas to get at least close to doing the kind of art I could be proud of. You can get an idea of the stage I'm at by looking at the (unfinished)picture at the bottom of my homepage. http://home.earthlink.net/~jesstodd/
