Why do people always say "YES" when they really mean "NO"? |

Something to keep in mind... the head is about 5 eyes wide. The space between the eyes is 1 eye in width. This is from the outside of the ears. If that makes sense.

hehe, seriously fallen, like people are supposed to memorize exactly what everything looks like.... USE PHOTO REFERANCE... u'r pic will look a hell of a lot better if u used reference, than if u tried to improvise what u "thought" whatever u drew was supposed to be. and if u get those stupid comments about people saying u'r copying, u don't have to give a rat's ass. there are many famous artists out there who use photographics reference (for example, Boris Vallejo)

It's a personal choice everyone must make when painting. Using reference is not 'cheating', and it is how the majority of professionally made paintings are made when dealing with figures and people.
I personally beleive one can achieve fantastic results without using any reference. That has been my focus for many years, and I beleive, with time and practice, one CAN remember how certain things look, such as eyes -- but more than remembering how an eye 'looks' like, you also get to understand how the eye works which makes it 'look' like it does. When you have understood this, you are totally free to create at your own free will, any time, any place. It's all a matter of technical understanding. Everything around us has physical properties which describe its meaning/purpose/function and how it reacts under certain conditions. Having the knowledge of all this is the ultimate challenge when drawing without reference, a challenge I continue to work on with my drawings.
Like I said, it's to each his own, and reference drawings always look nicer because you have an already existing image to relate to and compare. That is not my personal objective (and purely shows in the results of my work).

I find myself looking in the mirror for eyes; there's some advantages and disadvantages for that though. I tend to draw a LOT of my eyes like mine, so if you look very carefully, you can see some similarity. (same with bodies and faces too). You're you're own best reference

Well, start by using photo reference if it's needed, or look in the mirror, or whatever... any type of reference that suits you. And work towards understanding WHY eyes look the way they do. Once you've made a lot of art that has good eyes in it, then you can progress and begin to visualize how eyes would look to convey a certain mood. And eventually, you'll be able to create moods in your artwork, instead of just trying to replicate. Obviously cameras can duplicate an image much faster and of better quality than a digital artist, so try to create something when making your art...
