Alright you digital experts - expanding on Muzman's post, can anyone explain gamma beyond "brightness and darkness"? What exactly is it, and how is it used?

Umm... I'll take a shot at this one.. I'm not positive, but I think it's the intensity, or saturation of a color... like the difference between a mustard and a bright yellow... and you can adjust the intensity of any color, kinda like a 10-band equalizer for sound equipment... I think.. well, that's my best shot at describing it. Someone back me up if I'm right or tell me it's wrong if it is

Gamma is the intrinsic brightness of an image, usually from the low-end.
If you increase the gamma, the darks get darker, while the light areas stay the same.
Im going to assume youve got photoshop...open a photograph in Photoshop, and then proceed to image/adjust/levels and take the LEFT end of the slider to the right a little, youll notice that the dark areas have gotten a little darker, yet the light areas stayed the same...your basically tweaking gamma here.
Or am I just totally wrong and a dumb-ass?

Gamma correction basically controls the brightness of your display, but also varies the ratios of red, green and blue on your monitor. It all has to do with the intensity volatge of your monitor, and a virtual "responsive curve" that adjusts how your monitor displays color through its balance of light/dark and rgb ratios...its all electrical bullcrap :P System gamma is the same sort of thing, but its done through software instead (every program has its new way of screwing up gamma, because almost every monitor is configured the same...way to go software! just like a prog like netscape to go fix somethin that's not broken hmm?).
Gamma has to be configured differently because of the environment too...if you're room is too bright, your eyes will perceive different colors with different gamma settings...so it turns into personal preference there (I personally never bother touching gamma...except on some of the more extremely OLD macs at school)
So ya, anyway basically gamma just controls the light and the dark, so Qory was pretty correct there

Gamma is the curve that is made from black thru the grays to white. Like in Photoshop Curve adjustment. If you change the hieght of the middle of that curve your changeing gamma..
It's differant to brightness because that changes the hieght of the whole curve, and contrast brings the edges of that curve towards each other.
Oh well thats what I thought it was any way.
